Why not just switch the fan off while starting? Thats like starting the car with the rear heated window/headlights on, it should never really be done...

think he means if he starts the car when it's hot - ie fan will be on still.

its the starter sticking. Very common. Either get one of a fiesta 1.1, which is smaller so further away from manifold, this is what i use, and never have a problem. You can also goto ford and buy a new starter - they are a modern design now and work much better.

In an ideal world if the starters could with stand the heat then the car should be able to start with other things drawing from the battery.

Sad reality though is a lot of starters on CVH's are tired, and try to stall while cranking and as soon as you have other things on drawing from the battery, together with the excessive heat the starter does actually stall while cranking.

Rick dont you have a heat shield on yours?

I had the same thing, just went to ford and got a new starter motor. Spins over much faster now. Heat shiled on it doesn't really make much of a differance on it neither it would appear
