Am i losing power with a whining turbo.
My turbo is whining...the police siren noise. and whistles louder than it used to. so from what i've read the main bearing is worn which means it hasnt got long left.
but, will i be losing power due to this? when i first got the car, it sounded fine and was pulling well. now the turbo is whining, it still seems to go as quick, but is it? surely i must be losing power. or is every case different?

the noise you are hearing is the impeller scraping the compressor housing at silly speeds, it will still work, for a while...
however, you will find if you continue to use it like this then it wont be long before it really goes tits up.... imo you should get it re-cond asap...
in extreme cases ive seen the impeller worn away quite alot....thus means small shards of metal going into your engine,,,,not good at all

To add to that aswell if you use it too much then the shaft may also be scored beyond repair....
Catch it in the early stages, as with most things, and generally its for the better cost wise

i'd love the extra power, but once i feel the extra power i'll know i want more more more. besides 200bhp is bugger all use on the bala road in wales. i couldnt go any faster on there than i already do. i aint got the skill to go quicker than i do.
