As with most other RST's i expect the sensor has broken down in the dizzy. Give it a test.

first is there a spark from the main coil lead to dizzy cap?( take lead off dizzy, hold it with insulated pliers and hold close to side of engine!) If no then try testing the leads to the coil(12v bulb and fix 2wires to bulb and +/- wires which go to coil) get a mate to turn engine over if the bulb flashes then its your coil, if no then its either bad earthing, look at all your earthing points, try running a earth wire from -bat terminal to dizzy securing bolt and do the same but to the securing bolt of the silver ecu! If still no luck then try fuel pump realy is it burnt out? Does ur immobiliser play up? last but not least ur dizzy and the little box a magic on the side, replace dizzy and the hall effect sensor as the sensor alone is £70 but u can probably find second hand dizzy's cheap or borrow one to make sure it is that
phew almost outa breath, good luck

The distributor doesn't run to the coil on these cars it send the signal to the ecu which processes and/or modifies it and the coil is fired by the ECU.

yea it runs to the ecu which inturn goes to the coil, so if the dizzy doesnt work cuz the coils inside it hav broken down, corrosion or whatever then the signal to the ecu cld be wrong or there may not be a signal for the ecu, correct?

Yea but connecting an earth onto the coil won't show a fault because its the negative side that fires the coil.

fitting an extra earth wire to the dizzy.body can help the signal to the amplifier, it reduces the resistance which makes the signal clearer inturn geting a better more powerful spark.
The earth to the amplifier is the most important connection in the system, so the book says!
