Default Bad Habit!!

My small turbo EsCos has recently started smoking It seems fine as far as I can see (which isn't much through the back window of an Escort Cossie) when normal driving, but once you come to rest at idle sat at traffic lights or whatever, after about 20 seconds it starts blowing blue smoke out and doesn't clear until you set off again! Am I right in thinking that it's time for some new valve stem oil seals??

My old one did exactly the same! Nothing on over run or hard driving, just when it was idling!

In my case it was the turbo seals. The shaft had play in also, i just replaced it and the problem was gone!

Me too. It sounds like the Turbo is knackered.

Time for a nice new stage 3

Yep, sounds like the turbo oil seals are knackered. Smokes at idle, because that is when there is no back pressure to help them seal. Is the first sign that they are on the way out. Best to reolace sooner than later, because if they let go completely, your car will turn into James Bond's DB5 .

Valve guide oil seals have the same symptoms. Smoking at idle.

What am I best to do then in terms of repairing my Turbo, (going to try that first and hope it sorts it ) should I send mine away to get reconditioned or just exchange mine for another unit or what? Where/who should I be dealing with in either case, to get mine overhauled or to exchange it?
Also what are my limitations in terms of upgrading at this stage, bearing in mind that the engine is almost standard apart from a stage 1 chip, -31 actuator, and a Mongoose s/s exhaust and I don't want to put really alot more strain on any other O/E parts?!

Get an exchange on yours but with hybrid internals. I do a cool one that I use that will last for ages, be OK with what you are running now, and cope with years of abuse without dying!!!
