Had a similar sounding problem with my car, above the top spring retainer on the front leg there is a cup that holds a bearing, there is a nut above this that is only meant to hand tight ,but at some stage it had tightened causing the bearing to seize and shear through the cup,it caused a 'clonking' noise on the steering but more noticibly when parking this was because the spring wouldn't turn as much as the rest leg and would come a little un-seated.

Check the top mounts, the bearings and cups can wear and sounds like it could be it.

isnt to expensive and all the parts are all still available from ford.

front prop shaft U/j wears out due to the heat from the exhaust, also the top mounts as suggested, when I fitted my Koni's last year I found both cups snapped in half!!!!!

No Brom@Zoo mate 35 quid IIRC

Honestly before you Łcuk about with the legs etc, get under it agaain and rock it left to right with IGN off mate. You will see the rack move and if you put a long scredriver onto the rack amnd the other end onto your ear, you will hear the knock through it..

BTW If you have std bushes in your rack you will need to take rack off to fit new bushes/pop old ones out

HTH

In my case no, the rack didnt have to come offf, but thats because I already had some modified 909 2 part nylon bushes in there, so I just drilled them to soften them then popped them out, just pullyng the rack forward from the crossmember slightly, BUT if you have std bushes they will need pressing out in a vice etc, so sorry yeah rack out, alternator off etc etc (though again I didnt have to take alternator off as I have modified my crossmember just as they do on the grp N cars )
