Need a new or recon gearbox - how much should I expect to pay, is there any difference in quality and can anyone recommend a decent garage in or near Sussex?

Basically 3rd is crunching at high revs.

Cheers!

My reply also dissapeared so I repeat - why not rebuild/repair the one you have in your car?

Think my m8 paid Ł500 for a new 1, last year. I would wait till it goes, another m8's has been crunching like yours 4 over a year now!

It's my only car, so the solution needs to take a week at most. I'm not mechanically profficient enough to do the job myself, so:

How much to rebuild my current 'box, approximately?
How would this differ from a garage swapping mine with a recon?
Is there a big difference in quality/price between new and rebuilt?

I want to get it sorted fairly soon, as it's a royal pain in the arse when you want to drive in a 'spirited' manner!

Ł500 sounds bloody reasonable - I presume that was recon/exchange, without fitting?

Cheers!

i have been told that to do the rebuild yourself is quite a tricky job and there are several special service tools needed - i paid 600 for an exchange recon box with transfer unit - the did not include fitting - but ive done the clutch before and had to take the box off, that isn't a massive job, a few hours, but that was working in a pit, so u may need to use someones ramp or a pit.
