Thumbs up New to the scene looking for an escort cos

Hello all, firstly let me introduce myself. Im kev and from Nottingham. Im not new to the Ford scene, having previously owned to S2 RS Turbo's. I then left and had a few different cars including a Pulsar GTiR and my current car, a 2002 Mitsi Evo 7 GSR. However, as people say you will always come back and the only real option as far as i see it is an Escort Cosworth.

Basiclly im after a bit of advice as to what to look for in particular as well as the usual odds and sods. Any help or advice would be massively appreciated or if anyone knows of a good, honest, clean example looking for a new owner, give me a shout.

I dont really fancy trawling the country looking after abused and abused examples wanting silly money for them. Im not particularly after a concours example as its always nice to have put things right for yourself so you have some targets etc.

Anyhow thanks for your time

kev

You wont regret buying an Escort Cossie mate....

What colour are you looking for or would prefer?

best id say is to look at your future plans with the car, if you plan to go more than 330/350 BHP get a Big Turbo model, you only plan to have a sensible/reliable, slightly better drivable escort cossie go for a small turbo version.

Good Luck with your search. Keep us posted.

My advice is post what you are looking at on here.

So many people on here know the dodgy ones and they can usualy tell you the history before you commit even to going to look at it.

Dont let mileage put you off buying a car.... for a 1994 that car is still well under average mileage and i think the price pretty much reflects that too.

If it had 20k to 30k less or had a rebuild you'd prob see a much higher price tag.

Agree glen mate, tempted to go have a look but its quite a long way from me to go and not be what im looking for. If im totally honest, in an ideal world, im looking for a straight swap with my evo. The spec of my car is generous to say the least with the block capable of 1000bhp quite comfortably. Only thing its lacking is the turbo as its currently on a standard 7 turbo which is maxxed out at 380bhp. But then i havent even got the car back from its build yet so if i do find a swap they willbe getting a car with a brand new engine that needs running in

another possibilty. Lack of history is a touch worrying due to the nature of the car but any opinions??

So true.

Mate id think long and hard about this one.

I wanted an escort cossie since i saw my first real car drive past the playfield when i was 10 years old.

Last year 15 years later i finally realised my dream, and bought a big turbo mallard green cossie.

DOnt get me wrong it was a great car and i was over the moon for having me very one escos. But...and its a big but....

It was such a dissapiontment at the same time. The escos is an iconic car but its also very over rated.

So much so that after 6 months I sold it. Its a relativly lot of money for not a lot of car. Especially with some one like you stepping out of an evo.

But i can understand your hunger, i dont regret owing one but to quote one of my favorite songs..........

WHEN ALL OF YOUR WISHES ARE GRANTED, MANY OF YOUR DREAMS WILL BE DESTROYED.

Well thats my personal advise.

Buying wise, it buy on history and condition, rather than colour, mods and price.

If you can find one with in the Pf scene of the rsoc where people have known the car and its previous owners then that really is you best bet.

For christ sake do an HPI

as has been said.

big turbo if you want to be "original" or want bug power
small turbo if you want a more refined car and a slightly newer one which may have better body work.

Be very weary of mods and set ups with out some sort of recipt or tuners graph/report. Not saying DIY mods are bad as i work on my own cars, but you really should be looking to see some sort of evidence that the car has been set up professionally.

Look over the car for damage on hard to replace items, like front lower spoiler, rips in the seats, scrapes in the side skirts.

Only other advise i can really give is make sure you go for a drive, theres nothing i hate more than testpiolots. But on a car like this you need to be sure it is actually what you want.
Its a bit of a double edged sword, as a seller you dont want any old twat coming just for a spin in your pride and joy, but at the same time if the seller insists he drives, he may be wanding to do this to coversomething up? As said tricky, but if your serious on a certain car, then get insurance for the day and arrange with the seller a drive.

Other than that, its just take your time and dont buy the first thing you see. Plus side is its a buyers market.

Hope you find what your looking for.

cheers lads, much appreciated. Some very wise words there lee and i agree whole heartedly with what your saying 100%. In all truth and honesty, the reason behind wanting to move on from my evo is that i have lost heart with the car and i just cant justify or afford for that matter, to get the car to where i wanted to be with it. With everything that has happened with the economy over the last 6 months, work dropped off, we were cut back to 4 day weeks with minimal overtime, and the money i was earning was no where near what im used to. And as im sure 99.9999% of people will agree, your mortgage and bills comes first over car mods lol.

I certainly dont think im moving backwards from the evo to the cossie, if anything sideways. I've always seen my evo as a car that begs to be driven rather than polished. With the cossie, as much as like to drive a car hard, it will be something that will be locked away and kept in immaculate condition (maybe not concours but certainly to a high standard). Also, from what i have looked into, the cost of running a cossie is a geat deal less that evo, with services only required every 10,000 miles or year as opposed to 4,500 miles!! An insurance quote came in Ł700 cheaper than what it cost's for my evo!!

Its all about cost at the minute for me, even tho work has picked up, i dont really want to commit all my eggs to one basket then work drop off again and be left with no money for the sake of owning a 600bhp evo that i cant even use due to no more to run the thing lol!!

The requirements im looking at for the cossie are a big turbo model, any colour bar red, and interested in a straight swap deal with my evo. Any inspecion welcome, whether that be by a trained mechanic, HPI report, AA Inspection etc as i certainly will be doing the same with the cossie i find

Thanks once again lads, much appreciated

Ok I see your motive now.

Ive never experienced evos but I can't imagine there being a massive difference in costs?

Im assuming the evo and the prospective cossie are weekend cars?

Running an escos as a daily is not going to be anycheaper than an evo I souldnt think, especially as you have a 15 year older car to upkeep.

And also a massive factor, an evo you can just about get away with leaving it parked somewhere, In the escort cossie you will fint you can even go into a shop for a mars bar with out some sort of attention.

And if its a weekend car then again stuff like fuel and service intervals surley are not a big issue?
I know my cossie which was only very mildly tuned drank like a fish, and again these cars have 15+ year old technology opposed to a modern relativly efficient evo.

What are your plans for the cossie then, as you mention the evo being 600bhp, im assuming the cossie will be packing some power to keep your "relationship" with the car at a happy balance?

Not trying to put a downer on your "dream", but if your main reason for swaping the evo for an escort cossie is down to money and the ecomomy then im not sure if you will be any better off or indeed worse off.

The only up side is the evo is still depreciating in value, where as the cosworths now seem to have hit a platteau over the last 3-4 years. But this would not for me be a big enough factor to win the decision.

This will be done as obviously a trade wouldn't be possible without my car back Dont worry ross, all will be settled, just a shame i couldn't get the car to where i wanted

Lee mate, you'll be suprised in the difference of cost of running an evo and a cossie. It is purely going to be a weekend car, but regarding power, it will be remaining as it came. It would just be kept clean and tidy and something to look after You trying to talk me out of it mate :P

No not at all, in fact id quite like it if you did buy one, just offering my advise.

As for running cost, im still a bit baffled. If your selling the evo due to the recession but still looking to spend 15k on an old escort then you can to doing too bad.

And also if it is only a weekend car then i cant see fuel differences being massivly different, well unless you plan to do 100's of miles every weekend.

And as for Standard cossie power............

1st it is near impossible to find one that hasnt been fiddled with, and 2nd that 225-230ish bhp (i forget what the standard figure is) will soon become no very exciting.

Im all for you geting an escos, but I still find it hard to grasp your reasoning behind it being due to fininancial issues?

Not that i really care

So you got any pics of the said evo, and the spec?
