Default 15 Years in the waiting

Well firstly just want to say a BIG hello to all the fellow Ford Nuts out here.

This is the story of my car. Hope people dont find it to boring or stupid but for me 15 years of waiting have finially paid off.

Going back to around 1992, i was 15 years old and just starting to become interested in cars.

I remember contacting for and asking for them to send me some brouchers through the post, one of them being the RS book that contained the mallard green Escort Cosworth, when i saw this, for me I knew that this was my dream car.

Looking back now it was a car that just lept out of the book and the write up that ford gave it was just awsome. I remember showing my father who then was in his early 60's the broucher and him saying, when i retire Ill buy one of them, me being me said you being serious, tyo which he replied yes.

That was it for me, i got as much info on the Cosworth and used to pass endless magazines under his nose, saying why wait, you need one now. This went on for months and months, then one Aug weekend there it was my first glimpse of what was to be my future baby. I was walking up the road in our city center, and i saw this bright red escort cosworth drive down with a fetching older blonde woman behind the wheel. I just remember looking and looking again, I was in love with the car and not the woman, but as age has come on she would do to.

When i got home the first thing i said to my dad was i had just seen my first escort on the road and that it was even better in the flesh, it just had a presence that no other ford has matched, and in my eyes never will, unless they bring the escort back. Dad being the man he was enquired a little but never gave the game away. I still drooled over the mags and then with dad one weekend we were going in to Tavistock and dad said he was calling in to the local ford dealer Radmores, as we drove in there she was in the showroom, the very car that i had seen some months before. She was in the showroom, on ramps with lights all over her. I have never raced in to a showroom so fast and just remember being taken away.

Dad came in and looked all round the car and agreed it was a very nice car. We left and dad did not mention it very much, then on the following weekend we were in Tavistock again and dad called in, this time the car was in the front and dad said to me he was going to take it for a test drive, i was over the moon and expected to be in the passanger seat, but i was not, instead he went out alone. After 30 long mins(lifetime) he came back in with a broad smile and thanked the woman that was the owner of the garage and we left. I filed the 1001 questions at dad and in the manner he was just said it was very good to drive handled superb and was very very nice.

By know i suspected nothing untill he droped the bombshell, he had brought it, and that he was collecting it next wednesday. I still could not take it in, and asked him over and over again if he was serious.
Well it was the longest week going and to this day its a memory i will never forget, that wednesday in November, it was a grey dull day and about 10am, i saw this Wide very low, Escort Cosworth, making its way up the road. It stood out and made all the cars just look old and out dated.

Dad took mum, and i out and sadly i was neglected to the back seat and we went for or first trip in her. I remember the feeling and the grin that was spread across my face. People just stoped and stared and people would point, making my grin all the more.
This drive was the first of many but one that will always stick in my mind.

Dad enlisted me with the cleaning duties and over the years i became a dab hand at keeping it to the best that I could, think dad had invested his cash in just about every cleaning product going but the money was spent well.
We continued to enjoy the car and i still looked in the mags at other peoples cossie's and showed dad them. This is when we the started to change things on the car.
The first item that we looked at doing was the wheels, most people were running Rondels, but we wanted to be different, back in 94, 18ins was pretty big and special. Not many wheels were avaiable and some would spoil the lines of the car. We contacted a guy in Torquay Roy at wheel power and he was very helpfull and put us in touch with image wheels.
They sent us there cat and we come across a 3 peice split rim in a 5 spoke design. Thsi was the first ones they had made and were a one off. these took 5 months to make and one we collected them they looked awsome.

However we did not fit them as dad wanted to carry out some suspension mods. He gave me the task to look for tuning companies so i searched many and in the end choose Graham Goode, as they had a demo cosworth and from speaking to them they knew there stuff.
So it was booked oin to them and we made the trip from devon to ggr with wheels to.

When we got there at 9am i remember seeing lots of escorts parked up and i was in heaven, or so i thought. Alister was the guy that did all the stuff to our car and on our first visit of 4 carried out the following, exhaust, group a dump valve, filter, koni suspension, strut brace, and the new wheels. We come back 7 hours later and the car was transformed to a pure beauty and looked even better than Ford had made it.

We had a great trip home listening to the whooshing of the dumpvalve and the growl of the exhaust.
For many months we were happy and the cleaning still was taken on with passion, and many £10.00 pounds were passed to me for my efforts.
Our next visit to ggr was to have the engine stage 2 330bhp and the head gas flowed.
We took the car up to them and sadly come back on the coach as they wanted the car for a week. We went back up duly to collect her and i remember dad passing vast sums of cash to alister for the work. He said to dad enjoy the trip home.
The difference from the conversion was plain to see, and the car just wanted to pull and go. On the motorway i wont forget the guy that was up dads ass in his shiny merc slk telling dad to pull in, which dad did.
Dad then come straight back in and was on the ass of the merc, i rember the guy flooring it and thinking he would blow us away, but when he looked in his mirror was shocked to see us stuck behind him, he pulled over and i rember dad nailed it past this guy like he was parked up. That was to me raw cossie power and the guy in the merc just backed right off.

The drive home was great and we continued to be the cossie boys from devon, as thats how Alister put us. It was just a father and son becoming close, something that dad and i had never been, but its strange how a car can bring two people together, and for the first time not only did i love my dad, but he was my best mate.
As the years went on the car continued to be kept and maintained to the highest possible standards that we could. Upon our next visit to ggr, we had the norm lashings of carbon fiber, twin headlamps, all bushes replaced, carbon plates and some shiny stuff inside fitted. Again we well dad spent thousands more on her.

Our next trip was to have the security fitted, so we went to Autoleck in London, and Steve there did his best to provide us with the latest in security and protection. This was when Steve said to dad that the car was truly something unique and well worth a magazine feature. It was then that Performance Ford were dong there escort turbo that you could win in the mag. We were duly introduced to Jason Coladi the jorno. He looked over the car and said it was very impressive. He asked us to send him a tech spech along with some pics and letter which i did.

A few months later Jason called us and explained that he wanted to do a feature called National Velvet the union Jack and that 2 other cosworth's were coming aLlong to be featured.
The cars were one mint white cossie owned by Barry Smith in London, and the Blue 420bhp monster owned By Mark Sellick, and not to forget dads red baby.
We met at bristol and went to a disused air field and did the static shot and then the action shots. Sadly dad ran wide and come of the road and in to the over run, but this little mishap smashed the carbon splitter to bits and left me gutted that my baby was damaged.
Not to worry all was sorted when we returned home, and a new one fitted. The magazine feature was great and i felt famous (lmao i wish) but it was a good feature.

We went to our first rs show at bodmin and were at the time non members of the club, the marshall said when we got there are you not showing this car, i replied no as i felt it was not up to scratch, he replied i was mad, as it was stunning. He entered us in to the working class concours, and i quickly spruced the car up and did my best. Many people looked over the car and passed kind comments.
She was judged and i thought nothing of it as in my eyes many cars looked far better.
The results were called out and god knows how, but we had one the working class competion, and i had not even tried. It was at this point, i was 19 years old and a bloke that was a member kicked up such a fuss saying that we were not member and did not have a log book and that we should not of won, i explained what had happened and he was quite rude. I was a little hurt by his actions, but said to dad i would rather let him have first place than to cause up roar, so i duly gave it over to him, knowing in my heart that i was a better person than this.

My dad was proud in how i had acted and to this day i hold my head high in the fact that my fathers way had been carried on in me.
We duly joined the rs owners club, but i never showed the car again as i dont need that sort of pressure, for me the car is for my enjoyment.

The car was still going well and the next are to be improved was the stereo, something not big on my dads wish list as he was in his 60's.
He allowed me to go to Uplands in Plymouth and sort out a stereo for it. At this point Craig and I had built up a system to the sum of 5k, when dad come in, he was a little shocked at the price, but he was good to his words and allowed me to have the area that i was interested in fitted. So it sounded great to dad when he played his army bands music and had the subs blasting out. Not to my taste but it made us laugh.

Sadly my mother and father split after 40 years and things become quite bad and my father and i broke apart and things happened that led to us not having contact for over 8 years. So my intrest and love with the car died. It never stoped me missing the car or missing my dad more and the good times we had enjoyed with the car. My dad remarried and the car was garaged in 99. I had little contact with dad and did not know how the car was. I knew he still had it and had been told that he would one day pass it on to me, but i never held much hope on this.

In 2003 the car was put in to graham goode again to have yet more work done, and it was at this point that things for my dad took a pretty major turn and that it would affect him for the rest of his life. Dad is a type 1 dibetic and as a result he had to have his leg of, at the time the car was being modded again by ggr. Dad was never to drive the car again and while in hospital, developed mrsa and spent 13months in derriford not able to come home.

Then the final straw came on his 73rd birthday when dvla revoked his licience due to his eyesight being poor.
I still had not burried the hatchet with dad, but i did love him and it was not though not trying to.
Dad was adament he wanted nothing to do with me, but all this changed in 07, i was nearly killed in a bad bike crash in march. My 32k mag featured bike was hit with me on it by a silly jumped up boy racer at 50mph head on.
My mum was still in contact with dad and told him, i made a silly joke to dad saying ill buy the cossie off you rather than go back to 2 wheels. He said he would consider it.
He was going in to hospital for some routine heart stuff caused by being dibetic and that he would contact me after 4 days to sort the car out.
4 Days passed and i contacted dads wife who told me he was on holiday, i could not tell her i knew as she did not know he was in contact with my mum.
I was concerened so called the hospital. It was then broken to me that dad was very ill, and this was then when i made the choice i would go to see him. to see my dad in the state he was in broke me and reduced me to tears. there was my dad the big strong army guy looking weak and frail and fighting to live. We made up and burried the hatchet and over the last 5 weeks i have been with dad every day although we nearly lost him at one point nd i remember sitting in to the early hours holding his hand and just crying as the man i loved was leaving me with so much stuff left untouched. However im glad to say he pulled through it and has become beter.

We have talked for hours about the car and how much we loved her and that he was broken by not being able to drive it and her being sat in the garage sinse 99. We agrred a price and left it that when dad come out of hospital i would pay the cash and collect the car. Some might say why did he not give me the car, but dad wanted to teach me the values and by me buying it i would respect the car and cherrish her. The day come on 25 July i went to collect my new baby K91 EAR.

It was so good to see the car but i also broke my heart as for dad will not have her anymore and for him it was the end of a ere or decade and more. Its my dream now to have the maintance sorted out by my local ford dealer and to cut the car back and polish her back up. Then i want to get my day with me wheel chair included and get to a couple of shows and bring back the enjoyment that this car has given us.

For my dad, i just want to say. Dad, im proud of the man you are and for what you have made me. I want this car to live on and for me this car will always remind me of you in so many ways.

Im sorry people if this has dragged on but for me 15 years of boy hood dreams has come true, and i still pinch myself thinking have i got it.
I look forward to to any help tips and general info in the cossie and hope to meet people at the different shows i attend.

All the best

Gareth.

Once she is all serviced i will post some pics and spec of the car.

Fancy bringing the car to Ford Fair on Sunday to see fellow owners? I have a spare stand pass (but sadly no spare advance tickets, so you would have to pay to get in).

Hi Guys

Once again, thanks for all the support

Mike Rainbird, mate many thanks for the offer on Ford Fair, sadly the cossie is in Vospers with a few problems. I will take you up on it and look forward to meeting fellow owners.

Please could any one help me with the following please

Have had problems with the electrics where no lights were working, this was traced down to the stalk on the colum, lights are working but there still seems to be problems as in the following.

1. The side lights do not seem to be coming on
2. The twin head lamps only have the outside ones working which seems to be main lights and main beam.

3. The dash illim still seems to be very dim and not as bright as i remember.

4. Turbo Pod is not lighting up
5. Would like to obtain a turbo heat shield in chrome and also the cam belt in chrome, but would like one that shows the wheels off on the pullies.

6. Engine has been tarted up, but want to improve it further, so any tips would be great.

7. Secs monitor and boost gauges and best places to mount them and what ones to buy...

8. Finally after all the years the paint work still shines, but it would be my intention to cut it all back and re build the layers of polish and chrome work, could people give me ideas on what is the best polish and what stages to do this in.

9. Last one, does anyone have a alpine v12 amp for sale just need one channel to power my sub, has to be alpine as other amp is alpine

Thanks again and look forward to building my baby in to a real head turner. If i can be of anyhelp to anyone please feel free to buzz me.
