I think my coolant temp sensor is possibly faulty. It's not overheating or anything like that but i'd rather just change it.

It's the blue one, right? ECT?

if this was faulty Stoo it would usually cut out as the engine heats up..

basically the sensor gets confused and massivley over fuels the car.

Was just something Andy mentioned, said it wasn't quite right. Just assumed it ment it might be running a bit hot but reading okay on the gauge.

I may be wrong but the ECT doesn't send signal to the temp gauge, it's just signal to the ECU. like rapidcossie said, if the ECT dies, it overfuels the car hence black smoke out the exhaust, but the temp gauge should still read normal.

 

ECT signals the ECM and has nothing at all to do with guage reading.
When I replaced my ECT engine ran perfect 99% of the time but chronically overfuelled, and would foul the plugs if left idling for more than a few minutes, started and ran perfect though.
