Default 2wd or 4wd

Having trouble making my mind up, various reports point to the escort as being twitchy etc in 2wd
Would appreciate any feedback from those that have converted to 2wd of which there must be a few!
Front suspension also seems to be a problem sourcing correct assy's etc

Sorry for not giving full info
My car is the one in repsol livery in rebuilds/projects forum, usually posted by jacko, who works for me
The car will be used for track-days,and at this stage of the re-build my options are open
My intention was to go along the 2wd route, but as i'm at the stage of buying suspension ( coilovers), the people i,ve contacted are a bit negative on why i want to go this route
There must be lots of track day cars out there that have been converted for 2wd infact paul from rs pares is just building another after selling his old one and he's had a lot of fun in the past....Is there a compromise between stability/handling and arse end out fun factor?
Incidentally Iwont be running big horse power, so expensive transmission isnt a problem

2wd drive all day some mite say you are f##king the car but its the best thing iv ever done go for the quaife atb diff if your going to do it you get all the lux from aescort and all the fun of a saff all in one but the down side is you are throwing 15 to20 k around a roundabout in stead of a 5k saff you can see by my vid though thats the last thing im thinking about

barry0777 I make Escorts go sideways all the time without any problems....

Maybe something wrong with your suspention setup? Escort tends tooversteer much more easily then most Scoobie models. Just throw it opposite to the corner on th brakes, then turn in too sharply and apply some power... or just a touch on the brakes mid corner and then some power....

I am currently building a 2wd Escos road car as i much prefer 2wd...

As to handling,it`s just a short wheelbase saffy with better weight distribution so it should drive and handle every bit as good as a saffy..

Everything from 2wd saffy is straight bolt on,the only differences being the propshaft length(plenty of companies to sort this)and you will have to fabricate a gearbox mount...

Don`t listen to all the bullshit merchants,2wd escos`s are a piece of piss to build and drive great, feel free to PM me for any info or advice mate...

Totally agree

i have no problem in having my car sideways pretty much whenever i feel the need, and all the benefit of being able to get off the line that bit quicker!!

(but that could be why i break my box and diffs )

Sorry, but will all due respect, i think a 2WD escos is just wrong. If you prefer 2WD, buy a saff, not an escos. Its like taking the turbo off too because you dont like a bit of turbo lag.

You'd be making a superior car inferior in my opinion. Fair enough it would still be an escos, but a far less capable escos in my opinion.

Feel free to come and have a play with me around the track when it`s finished matey and well see how inferior my 2wd escos is to your vastly superior 4x4..

In fact if you can get within 2 seconds a lap,you can have it....

Ok mate its a deal!!! Im feeling confident.......................on a wet track.

Seriously though would a RWD escos be faster than a 4x4 one round a track??? Or a 2WD saff faster than a 4x4 saff???

Tbh mate it would be totally dependent on spec,as a std car the escort cos handles pretty shit and understeers quite bad but std saffys aint much cop either....Std i think the escort would deffo have the edge but with the right mods who knows....

Wouldnt mind having a play at a trackday though to find out....

My own car is pretty high spec so would expect it to handle fairly well once it`s set up properly.....

Round the grippy nice racing track, probably yes....(4x4 is generally not best idea for the track) but it's not designed for the smooth track driving.

barry0777 no problems, I'm pretty surprised you couldn't make her go sideways, Escos has some nasty tendency oversteer for 4wd car I think when you drive quick. Makes it a bit scary but a lot of fun and fast

Thanks to everyone for their varied advice & preferences, but i.ve made up my mind and i'm going 2wd
I think its a pretty personal thing at the end of the day, and what the hell, i can always go to 4wd at a later date, but i think; as a couple have mentioned, for track use 4wd will tend to push on a little when cornering
thanks again & keep on with the comments
