What is the average oil consumption to be expected from an EsCos, as I'm sure mine must be using alot more than it should be? I've just had the Turbo fully rebuilt so that can be eliminated, and there is no sign of any smoke coming out the back. I am running it on Castrol RS 10W-60, any opinions here?? If I am right in thinking that the amount of oil it takes to fill it from the minimum mark on the dipstick to the max mark is approx 1 litre, then my car seems to be using roughly 0.5 litre per 200-250 miles! This is too much, is it??

If you look on the slam panel of a cossie it says check oil daily.........There is a good reason for that....



Cossies do use a lot of oil generally mate,you can minimise it by fitting a decent breather system that recycles the oil mist back to the sump,such as the Bailey kit.....

Loook in your owners handbook, it will tell you in there how much a new / fresh (std) engine will use...

I've just had a look in my owners handbook and it says The oil consumption of the engine may be as much as 1 litre per 620 miles depending on driving style and conditions so with my engine having close on 100k on it does this make it sound OK really then do you think??

Well you are using 1 litre per 4-500 miles so at a guess, yes

Cheers Damo! I use my car every day so I suppose that's why it seems to be such a shocking consumption figure, but when you actually think about it it's about right then!

my new engine uses practically no oil at all.

as long as there is not a constant cloud of smoke coming from your exhaust i wouldnt worry too much

It could be the oil you are using. The Castrol expands when hot, so if you fill it up to the max level, when it does expand, it goes to above the level and when Cossies do this, they dump the excess out of the breather.

Try running it at the ž level and see if consumption is reduced .

OK thanks Mike I'll give it a try! What oil would you recommend I use, bearing in mind my engine has done just short of 100k?!- what do you think would be a suitable one to maybe try instead of the Castrol??

can confirm this as i filled my up too much last week after an oil change and its still coming out of the breather.

my small turbo escort cosworth,didnt use any oil it seemed,i was shocked at first,after the previous ones i've had ,i checked it religously,but on the whole the 4x4 were the best for not using much oil,the 2wd defo liked a drink,castrol rs was its favourite!

when you guys say over filling can throw it out the breather, can it also find its way to the header tank??

If it's in the header tank then there's something leaking

don't think so mate, it was about 6 months ago when it did it and it was just after an oil change.
i've since cleaned out the header tank and its not done it since.

engine oil in the water header tank is s defo no no ,mate, nigh on impossible for a large amount to get in there IMO

it wasn't a huge amount, just a small deposit on the side of the tank.
initially, i thought it could be the head gasket on its way out, as it does use a small amount of water. but, since i've cleaned it out, its never reappeared.

HG would cause it to mix slightly... take it for a good haed ragging that will confirm for sure

never had oil in water even after an over fill.

Hardly ever need to top mine up at all. Has never used a lot since I got it 6 years ago when it was a small turbo, nor now after the big turbo conversion.

must be very little wear on the engine mate

not many cossie owners can say that they havent used alot of oil in 6 years on the same engine...

how many miles have you done in this 6 years?

Either the Mobil Motorsport 15w50 or the Silkolene 10w50. My preferred choice is the Silkolene and is what I run in my own engine .

Bear in mind that my has done 150k km's and has been a recce car for a year! Some of the milage is stage kilometers...

Any ideas what to try next to resolve my high engine oil consumption then please Like I say my engine's covered near on 100k now, I've just had the Turbo fully & professionally overhauled so that can be eliminated, but the part which is baffling me the most is that there is no sign of any smoke whatsoever coming out of the exhaust under any circumstances (i.e start-up) so does this automatically mean that the valve-stem oil seals aren't at fault or could it still be them?? Any suggestions would be gratefully received

I tmaybe just worn piston rings :-( Rebuild time :-( But maybe you can just poor a little oil once in a while into it and live with that?

Would this not lead to noticeable smoking from the exhaust aswell though?

Not really, i tlooses mos of the oil probably when on boost - engine pump so much air then you won't see the smoke.


By the way is it on standard breather?

This can literaly pump liters of oil into intake. Get rid of that.

Yeah it's still on it's standard breather system & it's also stage 1 chipped so could this lead to the consumption being high aswell do you think?

So did I but then soon after a number of other forum members decided to join in and start making me think again by adding posts like "well mine hasn't used a drop in 1000 miles" & "mine's hardly used any in the 6 years I've owned it"! 6 YEARS - mine would've used a tanker full in that time!!!
