It could be the oil you are using. The Castrol expands when hot, so if you fill it up to the max level, when it does expand, it goes to above the level and when Cossies do this, they dump the excess out of the breather.
Try running it at the ¾ level and see if consumption is reduced

OK thanks Mike I'll give it a try! What oil would you recommend I use, bearing in mind my engine has done just short of 100k?!- what do you think would be a suitable one to maybe try instead of the Castrol??
Either the Mobil Motorsport 15w50 or the Silkolene 10w50. My preferred choice is the Silkolene and is what I run in my own engine
