Brake pedal feel on Escort... how's yours ?

also, a kind of "hard spot" in the steering wheel when turning it at low speeds (or even when stopped), what could it be, and could it cause chatter when braking too ?
(i changed both Truss rod ends, new Eagle F1 GSD3 fitted today, tracking set perfectly) and problem still there
relation between both ? and what could cause this? this makes the steering very unprecise and light sometimes, heavier other times, which causes the car to be a pain to drive because you never know where you place your wheels

Petrucci is this hard spot in area of center position of steering? Or somwhere else?
It could be:
-something wrong with McPherson bearings or mounts
-steering rack problem
Both can cause this.

Or it could just be that the power steering pump is up the shoot or a pipe is kinked or the pump pully belt slipping / jumping through wrong tension.
Just for even more good news, the Ford Escort Cos front wheel bearings are no longer serviced . I kid you not .

"steering pump is up the shoot" -> what does it mean ? 'dead' ?
Also, the high pressure hose from power steering has been changed last week, no change. New power steering belt changed last week too, and problem is still the same. Tension is auto adjusted, isn't it ?
Yes the hard spot is at the center of steering, approximately

Plenty of SKF ones. I got it in local car parts place.

On a Sierra I've driven it was joint on steering column, but it may be as well the steering rack - it wears most in the centre position.

So just to confirm then as I'm about to do mine, to bleed the rears you simply put the ignition on, hold the pedal down for no longer than 15 seconds & it's done?
Do you do this only once on each side?
Do you press the pedal as far as it will go or just half way down?
Do you just bleed the fronts the conventional way as in several pumps?

Regards brake pedal feel.
All original parts.
My Escort brake felt a little bit spongy, I liked that, I knew how hard to push to get the desired effect with no surprises.
Modified parts.
However when I changed to AP 330's up front the braking effect was totally changed almost to the point of no good.
Off the gas and on to the brakes resulted in front wheel lock up, no real feel, just the sudden braking effect.
I'm surprised others on here do not find this effect when going to big brakes and still use the same pump system? The solution might be to increase the rear size for a better balance?
Barry0777, I agree with you regards the effect when not wearing belts.
Don't forget to check torque of 32mm axle nut, I think 300Nm. I checked mine last week and surprisingly the Front left was not tight!!
(and what about the size of those rears, 40mm??).
If you fit new longer wheel studs, check the torque of the wheel nuts very regularly as the studs will probably move a little as they 'bed in'.

kennyA 99% of the people here iwll use big brakes with ABS on, you probably have it off - so wrong braking balance is felt much stronger, I can see no other explaination. WIth stanrad brakes braking balance is a little bit toomuch to the rear, so with AP330 and typical 300mm rear convertion it sunds like it might be right. Maybe you should give that a try (convertion using standard rear calipers) it might help and it's not costly.

Hi Azrael
Just to keep with this thread, my car did not shake or the steering wobble with the brake upgrade, but it did wobble when some of the nuts were loose.
If Petrucci has fitted new brakes then its possible the braking improvement has highlighted another problem not seen or felt with the original brakes.
I'm sure he'll find the prob, step by step checking each item.
Note,
I've removed the pump system and fitted a Pedal box, the brake feel is now that I have to press much harder but the brakes don't 'grab' like they used to. I would like to improve the brakes further, my thinking is, what would be the minimum size brakes to use when using a pedal box. The weight of the car will also be a factor I think.
Will fit 300mm AP's in the next few weeks, sourced by Mike R, thanks mike.
