Default Why is my wireless network so slow?

I have some fairly new Netgear 108Mbps wireless kit, (an ADSL router, 108Mbps USB stick and 108Mbps PCI card).

With some careful preparation they all have pretty much a full signal (never less than 75%)

Both PCs are connected ot the router at 108Mbps yet it takes over an hour to copy a 350Mb file from one to the other And the stats say it never transmits at more than 2Mbps during this.

I have the latest drivers/router firmware and it seems quicker if I copy from one of the wireless stations to the pc that is wired into the switch on 100Mbit cable and then onto the other

There is no one else connecting to my network (it has a 128-bit key and the name isn't broadcast)

Any advice to speed it up? I was thinking I maybe need another wireless access point in the room with the two wireless PCs, but the router is only across the landing.

Just turned the name broadcast on and it has gone up to 7.5Mbps

Might knock the encryption down to 56 but i'm not turning it off completely

Thanks Ranj, any other advice? It's still well off the 108Mbps advertised

You will never get 108mbits, it means 54mbit each way (full duplex).

Netgear are known to have duff antennas, it "may" be that.

I would sugguest moving them closer to see if that helps and make sure the arials are screwed tight and there is no play in the connections where they screw in.

Good luck!

you're quoting theoretical manimum speeds there mate, don't expect to get even HALF what it says on the box

saphycozzie-adz
I'm using an Asus antenna on the PCI card (as the Netgear one is quite rightly shite)

Jim Galbally
I know but i'm getting roughly 2% speed!! 1.7Mbit seems to be the average

Its usually the router end that sucks ass.

I feel your problem a signal strength one.

If you can try another card or router.

All the cards report a good signal (full or 7/8th full), but I will try and buy another Asus antennae for the router as it made a HUGE difference to my PCI card signal. Good idea thanks mate

Do you think having two wireless PCs in one room and the router in another may mean the PCs interfere with eachother and so the signal goes to pot?

Managed to change it by selecting G & B instead of 108Mbit, limited now to 54Mbit but its transferring the files much faster (a constant 7Mbps+) now, thanks Jim

The pcs wont intefer with the signal. If changing the channel doesnt work then you have a signal strength/quality issue. I have a 3com router upstairs with my laptop in the room below. I get full rip so you defo have some kind of issue!

Let us know how the new antenna works m8

its not limited to 54mbit, it was ALWAYS limited to 54 108 is a lie

its like saying a cossie can do 170mph in std trim... 150mph + 30mph in reverse

Changing the channel has worked wonders Tried a few channels and can get around 10Mbps constantly now, so it only takes a couple of minutes to transfer the files

The only problem is moving from channel 6 limits it to a 54mbit connection rather than the full 108mbit (not that im getting anywhere near either still ) Could it be my cordless phones interferring on channel 6? Or all the neighbours networks? (Can see a couple of others in the available networks but its a big detatched house so I guess they wont be too much of a problem?)

anything can be causing the interference, but its likely to be the other wireless networks. remember they all have the same default channel, and nobody ever changes it 1st thing you should do is to pick another channel when you buy one

As Jim says 108 is a bit naughty as it means 108 at full duplex ie send and recieve flat out at 54mbit each.

10mbit is still a bag of shite really. Something is up.
