Default NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Frog got caught speeding!!!!

In My car

Which is in HIS name

And doing a whooping ..... wait for it..... 36mph in a 30 zone...

He said he had seen the van so there was no way he would have been speeding, so now he is convinved that the size of the wheels affects the speed and that the speedo needs calibrating....

So.... does any of you know where we can get it calibrated? please?

Remember it's about saving lives and not at all about raping the motorist for more cash

Was he cautioned at the side of the road or did it come through the post?
If it's the latter it has to be worth trying the section 2 of PACE trick www.pepipoo.co.uk

I don't deny it is supposedely meant to stop people going too fast, but 36mph.... on an empty road? Mmmm..... I tend to call that taking the mickey...

Anyhow, not arguing the point, just want to make sure it is right as he said he saw the van and checked his speed at the time.

He was not stopped at the side of the road, we received it this morning.

I wasn't arguing hun. I was being a sarcy git at the tax collectors

Try pepipoo then as it explains a few avenues you can take to try and get off.

No worries I am not in an arguing mood today anyway!! You would have known if I had been!!

He doesn't want to skive it (sp?), just want to make sure the speedo is right. Then if it is, fair enough. If it isn't, then we will argue it. We changed it last year and my wheels are not standard size I believe. So he could be right after all...

do you know anyone with a GPS sat-nav, Tomtom or similar? they will give you an accurate speed reading - but to get an accurate reading you need to be doing a constant speed in a straight line, as the readings are heavily averaged so need to have settling time.

You might find this useful. Just put in the wheel/tyre size your car had as standard and then put in the ones it has now and it will tell you how out your speedo is. if at all

Can French people be deported?

Give him a smack on his naughty bum! We calibrated my mates Mini Clubman speedo by me driving next to him and holding up bits of A4 paper with

30

50

and

70

At which point he used tippex to mark the spot on the speedo and wrote it in later

I am offering my services to drive the pace car.

What's really annoying is that 30's and 40's I stick to, that's where people are, and most dangers about. Last place I expected to be caught speeding

I've changed my mind... I am pretty sure the road used to be a 40mph, it's four lanes wide ffs must have been reduced to 30 recently and I didn't notice
Funny thing is, I remember the van being there and I was going to wave... Can you imagine the picture if I had, waving at the camera while being caught speeding

Is the speed training course any fun ?

I thought adding bigger than standard wheels actually appeared that you were going faster than you are according to your speedo?

ie, when i was doing 80mph in my escort with 17's on my GPS calibrated i was actually doing 76mph, worth a thought

nope, opposite.. the speedo measures the driveshaft speed effectively, fitting larger diameter wheels will mean you are travelling further and hence faster for every wheel revolution.

Seriously though, that is a pisser. As far as the speedo and wheel size thing, your probably right. In the past i've used "Speedy Cables" in Islington (London). You have to remove the speedo, count the number of turns of the speedo cable for 7 revolutions of the driving road wheel, and send the speedo with that info to them, and they calibrate the speedo accordingly, apparently. I wasn't happy with the service, and subsequently, have resorted to the "Paddy" method in the past, Just without the tip-ex I thought road speed to speedo reading could be checked on a rolling road

Generally the rule is 10%+2. Above that and they will do you.

Bigger wheels will indeed make your speedo read slower than you are travelling, but seeing as most speedos read fast to begin with, it isnt usually a problem.

Checking against a GPS based product is best.

I would seriously look into whether the speed limit has changed recently. I know that there are quite a few roads lcoal to me, that have been dropped from 40-30, and in some cases national-30mph.

There werent any large signs to notify the changes, just tiny speed limit sign posts.

A few years ago I seen a speed camera van parked roadside on a national speed limit road. This was a dark wet night. Weirdest thing though, as in reality, even if you were doing 60mph on that road, you would be flying. Rarely would anyone be doing more than 50, as the road really doesnt allow it.
I stopped and questioned the officers in the van as to what speed the camera was set to record at ( police operate them here ).
he wouldnt answer. I then asked was he aware of the speed limit on this road.
He said of course they were.

Annoyed at the lack of answers, I went back to my parked car, some 60-70 yards behind them.
Within 5 minutes they were gone, and they had only been there about 10 minutes.

I'm pretty sure they were snapping away at drivers driving below the legal limit, because they werent aware of the speed limit on that road.

Jeez, so many posts

I will have to go have a look to see if the speed limit has been dropped, but I guess at the end of the day it's still my fault for not noticing.

The wheels are 17", tyres, I can't remember, all I know is that the overall rolling radius is not the same as std wheels + tyres, it could be above or below.

If I thought I was doing 40 or thereabouts, I probably was doing 36mph, thinking everything was ok, as I said, I even considered waving at the camera , it's just that the speed limit has been lowered

Only cos I don't light up the tyres when I leave the meets
Funniest thing is that I have only ever been caught speeding twice, and that was twice in a 30
I guess I spend too much time looking at my speedo to make sure I don't exceed 2.5K rpm

Ginge, thanks for the offer, won't be necessary, a friend of ours has a GPS we can borrow, but your offer and trust is much appreciated nontheless (I love this place).

I might take up the driving awareness course just to avoid the points.

I would have thought that councils would have legal obligations to make it very very clear if a speed limit on a road has been changed.

I know there is a section on one of the speeding websites, about illegal 30mph zones, as councils dropped the speed limit without following proper legal procedure for doing so.

With regards to claiming someone else was driving, iirc, it is your responsibility as the owner of the vehicle to know who was driving when. So claiming the car was driven by a potential driver won't cut it I don't believe.
