R/C race meeting today (with pics)
TT and I went to a 1/5 scale R/C car race meeting today to see and get an idea of 1/5 scale racing and how far Tony would need to develop his 1/5 scale Porsche GT2 for racing. The circuit is a purpose built track in kent.
There were around 30+ cars there and the day starts off with everyone being split into sessions of 5-6 cars on track and having a warm up a session and then setting a qualifing time. Then they are put into heats and then finals for their class. Each car has a transponder mounted onboard to accuratly record the lap time and number of laps (it can be very confusing as to who is leading the race, when lapping back markers
)
Weather started off dry but a small rain shower soon had the cars driving very very slowly. These cars struggle to put any power down (even in a straight line) in the wet and plenty of sliding, fishtailing and spins to be seen
Then it dried out again and they were upto full speed again, i have to say i am stunned at how fast they can drive these cars, how well balanced and how good under brakes a proper 1/5 scale car is!
an excellent day out, and prob a very good hobbie to get into if your loaded with dosh
Heres the pics :

Just to give you all an idea how much better a 1/5 scale car is compaired to Nitro cars, just check Tony's Porsche against my Scooby

Sorry m8, but you wouldnt stand a chance against a pro 1/5 scale car, the size and weight of these cars make the braking and cornering of these cars is unbelieveable.
JB, that "ECO" is bottom of the range and would get absolutly slaughtered on track by a sports or compitition version. (p.s you will need to upgrade the brakes straight away to hydrolic front discs ( because on the ECO the standard ones dont work too well
my car is a schumacher xtr3e, it has a 3 spd gear box pushing it 2 a top speed just over 70mph, the shock r oil filled shock wiv pro shock bodies, it has carbon fibre shock towers front, it is 2wd, plus my brakes work gd enough considerd it stop it in bout 4-5 seconds frm 70mph, my car will do o-40mph in 1.5 seconds and it will cover 50 meter in 2.5 seconds frm a standing start and i think those r pretty good and will keep up with a 1/5th and and my car runs 2.1bhp (3.5cc) and has a power 2 weight ratio of 940 bhp per tonne
sorry but corner speed and stability
Benn basicly has what you have, but his wouldnt keep with a 1/5 scale race car on a track. You have a hell of a lot of power, tiny little wheel base that would pull wheelies all day long.
These FG 1/5 scale cars have a massive long wheel base, a ride height of 10-15 mm MAX!, ARB's front and rear, 4.5 - 5 bhp, Hydrolic front and rear disc & pad brakes (1 disc per wheel and proper working calipers) massive wide front and rear slicks with enough weight to push them into the track. These cars were designed to be the best on track and circuit racing
They will complete 30, 40, 50 laps without getting out of shape and produce consistant lap times without the worry of engines getting hot, running problems, stalling etc, that you ALWAYS get with nitro engines

i think my tyres r bout 1.5-2 inches wide on back and front and if i get road tyres it will b even better, my engine has neva had ne stalling, running problems or gettin 2 hop it has always worked fine, and 4 sum reason my car will spin out at bout 5-10mph but neva at higher speeds like 30-70mph wen i corner, and the wheel base aint really that short it is quite big at sumfin like 300-350mm wheelbase
i no it wouldnt beat 1 round a track but it will still b a gd competitor against 1

Thanks for the comments about my car
It was a good day out, and gave me a good insight into what it would take to take my RC hobby to the next level. The car would need a fair bit of work doing to it to make it half as good as these all alloy and carbon light weight cars. Still, that's what credit cards are for
Yeah Dave, the track is out near Lydd kinda way from us
PMSL @ Adam - Your monster truck would be pants round a track. I still can't belive how much power it kicks out for such a small engine. I am hoping that once I finally decide on an exhaust system for mine, it should be around the 4.5 - 5bhp mark. Fancy a tarmac drag race?
JB - If you do decide to get one, don't buy an Ecoline model, get atleast a Sportsline, for Ł70 more, the extra kit is well worth it. However when I get another one, I will get a second hand Competetion chassis, already modded with Hydraulic brakes (Ł200 each end).
I do have a couple of MPEGS here, one is 13 meg and the other is 5 I think. If anyone wants to host it for a bit?

looks wicked fun!
got a track near me where i sometimes take my 1/8th nitro but its not really designed for 1/8th and the whole time the car has the back end out even with 4x4, diff and disc brakes
undrivable but fookin good fun

Get the feeling TT's will beat mine now, and his is only 2wd
Just keeping yours on its wheels would be an achievement Benn
PMSL @ Keeping it on it's wheels
I have ordered a few bits for mine today (no go faster bits though) and want to find out about getting the best exhaust pipe I can for it and want to order that 2morro.
My brake fluid won't be in until Thursday/ Friday, then I should get it back

You need more than stabalisers, you need wheels on the roof aswell!
