I had this problem with a fiesta van i had i put a 1.6 carb engine in it but it all ready had xr2i efi clocks in it which is an electronic ignition not a coil 1 like on carb.i changed clocks to a non efi and it worked fine so you can change clocks that is if your car used to be efi??? or there is a wire you can join to the coil for it to work but cant remember which 1....

I think the car was a 1.6,there is not much history with the car,so what your saying is that i could put a mk 5 xr3i clock in and this may work for me?

Theres a pot inside the clocks you can adjust, its because the clocks came from an EFI car.

I could not see no pot inside it, ive been talking to someone and they told me to use a mk5 1.4 escort clock and this should solve the problem.

Thats a better idea, i didnt think of that, the 1.4's are DIS aswell. Im sure they have a pot inside, i know mk3/4's do, thats how the calibrate them when they are made

yes my car is using the conventional coil and dizzy, does this mean i cant use the clock out off the 1.4,thought the 1.4 mk5 escort was an carb so i got told i could use the clock from this,or am i wrong?

The 1.4's to my knowledge are DIS, the problem you have, is you have clocks calibrated for DIS, (2 coils effectively, so obviously only sparking half the amount per coil, as theres 2 plugs run per coil), and your running a coil that operates all 4, therefore getting double the reading.

Check out the 1.4's incase im wrong but im sure everything in the MK5 range is DIS.

Can you post a picture up of the rev-counter itself (the PCB)

Sorry, i think you misunderstood what i meant. I meant the actual rev counters PCB, within the clocks, there will be a pot on the actual rev counters PCB

Did you wire the car?

Ive played about with rev counters on mk4's and that was how i did it, the board may even be exactly the same, cant remember now though been a while, but om mk4's the clocks to run off DIS were the rarity, and i compared the rev counters out of a car that was DIS and one that was conventional coil and the rev counters were exactly the same.

Are you in a rush to get it done?

Think ive sorted it m8,i had a old mk4 rev counter in my garage so i took the mk5 pcb rev counter out and put the mk4 pcb rev counter in and it seems to now be on 900 rpm now, Will have to take the car for a spin tomorrow to see if it has worked

Just took my car out for a spin and the rev counter did not work, when its on tick over it sits on 900 rpm fine, But when i take it throught the gears it wont go more than 3000 rmp, When im on the motor way sitting at 70 mph its only at 2000 rpm,I dont know what car the pcb i found was out off, all i know it was a mk4 one, what pcb do you think i should try in it next m8?

To be honest with you mate it might not be the PCB, it would be extremely helpful if you could find out where the rev counter is wired to, it could be wrong for all you know?

Just out of interest aswell what engine are you running, im presuming a FRST engine running DIS yeah?

Fairplay that car is the bollucks

Right, so your running a RST lump running from a conventional coil. Any mark 4 rev counter with the exception of the EFI should work straight off, the EFI being the only DIS model in the range.

Try another mk4 PCB and if that doesnt work i'd start asking questions about the wiring personally, can't see numerous rev counters being faulty.

Christ Your running the power steering off that, does it actually tick over ok

Going to go to a scrap yard in the week and get another mk 4 rev counter in ,I think it will work with that,Ive just done a engine rebuild on it put low comp piston in and the car runs sweet as a nut on tick over, Need the power steering with 19 rims on
