Default wiring nearly caught on fire!!!!

Went out in the car for bout 15mins, put the heated screen on for the last few mins cuz it started steamin up, didnt put the heater on cuz i dint wana sweat like a pig, as i got on the c/p i pushed the button to turn it off and it wouldnt go off, took the keys out of the ignition and put my hand through where the radio should be to see if was just a bit loose and the wires were so hot it burnt my thumb!!! i decided to rip the plug out cuz i really didnt wana see her go up in smoke and take off the button from the connector , after doing this the wires went cool again in a few seconds!! just wondering if this has happened to anybody b4?? b4 this happened the switch was dimmer than the rest when on? could it just be a faulty switch or a wiring fault? wires all see fine though? any suggestions would be great!! cheers

Well first things first test the switch, the switch IIRC is momentary push to make, personally i doubt its the switch but thats the first thing u want to check (the switch wouldnt ever make the wiring get hot).

What sort of state is the screen in? Ive seen on a lot of the Escorts/Orions the front screen starts to deteriorate after some years (going white around the edges etc),may well be the screen!

Just test the switch i would, could be money wasted, put a meter on continuity setting across the 2 bigger terminals on the back and test when its pushed in that there is continuity.
