Just heard on the news, they are gonna do 50 Veyrons each year..
But, on top gear, Clarkson was saying how each one, costs 5 million
to produce, so (priced at 850K) they are making over 4 million pound LOSS on each one?
how do they hope to survive!?
Orrrr have i got something horribly wrong here!?
lol
10 cars sold = £40MILLION LOSS !?
i thought they would make 5 and then call it a day. lol

Volkswagen made the car as a project basically, to see how far they could actually go but also to beat the F1.
There will be a huge loss yes but the car wasn't designed or built to make money - it's a technological showcase and nothing more.

i thought that was the example JC used on the prog!?
or something similar..
Said they cost 5 mill each to make, you can buy it for 850k, so its a bragin?
I should think gurne is right, and that the losses are from the development of them, and that each one produced from now on will turn a profit.
Manufacturers NEVER make money on paper from any car, as if you make a profit you have to pay tax, the more you can write off in new buildings and stuff the better, LOL

Even thou they may have made a huge loss on the development of the car VW now know how to build the worlds fastest car with things like
How to build a 1000bhp engine and make it reliable
How to make a gearbox to cope with 1000bhp and make it reliable
How to make a car that dont take off at 250mph (materials, stresses, areodynamics ect)
and a few other things on top of that put VW one of the most if not THE most technically advanced companies in the market.
They are going to be using the things they have learned from building the Veryon for the forseeable future.
At least untill another company take up building the fastest car ever.
Besides if indicator stalks are 4.5k each, imagine what the servicing bill on one of them is
Most cars are made and sold at a loss these days, but the real money is in servicing and spair parts. I'm pretty sure they will make some of the money back on servicing and the R&D for new cars they wont have to do.

And as for making an engine reliable at 125bhp per litre, cosworth did that on a little known number called the "YB" about 20 years ago mate!
That car is a marketing exercise far more than an engineering one in a lot of ways i reckon.

I do suppose if you look at it that way then yeah it dont sound like much, but compairing a car like the bugatti to the cosworth is like compairing Beta-Max to DVD. Beta-Max was very very good for it time and so was the YB, and both laid down advances in tech that have lasted all these years. Just now everyone else has caught up so its time for the next step.
No doubt it was a marketing excerzise either cus VW can now say we can build better cars and we can prove it.
Stu, if you bought a cossie new in 1987 or whatever nad stage 1 chipped it and maintained it properly, it would still be running fine now with 100K miles on the clock, they are VERY reliable, only reason they are thought of otherwise is all the bodging home mechanics who dont service them properly or build them properly

hence the
& Look at me XR2, 140,000 miles and the only thing thats gone wrong with it was me putting it into a barrier at the ring
The car cost 5 million in production costs (that's not including r & d marketing etc.). VW didnt do it to make money. They did it to prove a point. Same thing happened with concorde. That was produced with massive losses just to prove it could be built. As for the engine "only" having 125 bhp per litre. 1000 reliable horsepower from an 8 litre engine is extremely impressive. How many 1000bhp cars do you see that you could drive as far as clarkson did on topgear without it even overheating? Personally I see the veyron more as a muscle car than a sports car anyway. And it's certainly got muscle.

Just found that as well. How many cars do you know that need a mechanic to be flown to it.. love it.

Most of the bloody thing was designed+built in good old blighty anyway so I dont know how VW can claim any sort of fame for breaking new ground, they just funded it, any car maker of their size could of produced something similar by throwing cash at it.
Its a nice car dont get me wrong but I'd rather have something else, dont know what because I'm not really up to date with all the supercar bollox, but I'm sure a Porsche or Ferrari would be high up the list

losing 5 million aint bad,,,,,,, ford is loosing over a million a month hand have been for a while
you need to see what cash they actually make then see there losses
big companys cook there books legally anyway

The only really impressive thing about the veryon project is that someone managed to convince the accountants to let them do it IMHO
Doesnt do anything that any of the other manufacturers couldnt have done too, they all just cant convince the bean counters to let them!
Awesome car though, thats not me having a dig at it, im just saying all the manufacturers could do the same if they tried.

chip of course they could as they contracted the job out
be a improvement if it was say one of there dealerships that made it with just 2 master techs and there apprentices in there lunch breaks
i would then buy a VW

Compared to throwing 100 million a year into formula one to try and make yourself look hit tech, its not a bad way to spend money really, look how much publicity its had already
Im surprised VW didnt do it with a disel engine though TBH that would have made FAR FAR more sense from a marketing point of view.
