I have heard that CVH Engines have a design fault that doesn't allow as much oil to get to the tappets on the No.1 cylinder. Has anyone found a way round this i.e. machining etc?

better quality oil and regular changes and the cam should last years. Other than that unless you've spent a fortune on your cam, change it every few yrs along with the tappets.
and i thought it was number 4 that wore the most?

Cylinder 1 and 4 are both as far away from the cylinder head oil feed as each other so either could have a problem as equally as the other. The oil feed comes up the centre of the block and forks off either way.

..... Finally!
Just check your castings and oilways as I have seen some which have not been fully bored through. There are also oil drip resevoirs which can be badly cast, although I suspect the main problem ist poor pressure to the tappett causing it to no longer cope.
If you want the ultimate go roller rockers and roller tappets on a good cam you should see it lasting forever (a friend runs this and has raced it for years). The standard setup eats cams if you like your revs.
Anything is worth a try as cams cost lots of money.
