when i was trying to get it off earlier it was coming up slightly but i could hear the gasket squelching and sucking on the rocker cover trying to hold it on!

yeah thats what i was thinking too,
am leaving it to 'attempt' to dry overnight which may help a bit but i think it just requires a bit more strength!
there isn't that much space to pull it up from though

Don't hit it with a hammer: you'll dent it
Do as tommy suggested if it's still stuck and gently cut through the gasket around the edge. Even if you don't go all the way through, it will give you some more leverage against the last bit still stuck.

its finally off, had to undo one of the bolts on the throttle bracket to lift it off though which drew some blood!

note the oil where the gasket was sitting, it was soaked.

That oil is normal, and usually forms part of the seal. Looks in nice condition too, nice and clean. U do have to remove the throttle bracket BTW

cheers mate, it should be quite fresh it was only rebuilt about 5k ago.
in the end i slid a stanley knife between the gasket and head along the sides and it came off.

good old stanley!
if ya gaskets leaking, little tip, check ya breathers, if there blocked there will be pressure build form the crank and this sometimes blows the gaskets cos there no pressure relief
so not always down to the gaskets, your be forever replacing the gaskets cause of the pressure build up blowing them out

well since the gasket has started leaking i have fitted a catch tank and checked all the breathers with it venting to atmosphere.
hopefully this will be the last leak for a while....... who knows!
also recently i had been getting a bit of clutch slip when it comes on boost im hoping this has been down to this gasket leaking otherwise its new clutch time!
