would running a car leaner than lamda 1 be better on fuel and power ect or is it too dangerous to do so, im talking about for normal driving, part throttle type stuff and not for flat out full throttle stuff


as i know that the leaner the car the quicker and more fuel economy aswell as better emmisions

can cars be mapped like it or not

sorry just thinking out loud and wondering the negative sides,,,,,,, i know that the cylinders get very hot when lean,,,,, what else would happen

remember this is for normal town driving idea so part throttle type stuff

 

Yes you can run leaner than 14.7:1, and I personally find up to 15.5:1 is fine. Leaner than this and you start to lose more power and engine efficency than its worth. HC's start to rise dramtically again when running leaner than 15.5:1 and of course EGT's increase as well.

Strange question to ask but there's your answer.

Personally if econcomy is your thing buy a small engined turbo derv.

 

But there is no reason why you cant run it lean during cruise, to help economy.

Why waste fuel if you dont need to ?

 

so karl if i got my car mapped by you could you map the part throttle for normal driving to be leaner then for fuel economy

i was just wondering if it was possible and if so is the reason incase theres a problem and the car pontentially melts or is mapping to this point alot extra hassle

Lambda 1 has nothing to do with fuel economy, lambda 1 is the chemically correct fuel ratio for the most complete burn with least emissions and byproducts produced.

This chemically correct ratio is 14.7:1 AFR and is termed as lambda 1.0 Its certainly good for economy, but 15.2 is better, as we get leaner then this most engines will start to missfire and dump precious energy out of teh engine on teh exhaust stroke, wasting fuel anyway. The higher teh compression the leaner you can burn

Most power is produced via energy release from teh fuel at around 12.6 but this burn is hot so we generally run richer for safety although it DOES cost power to richen from this area.

It's worth mentioning why cars run 14.7. As stu said, it's chemically correct, and going leaner results in more pollution. Allthough the CO level drops, the Nitrogen and it's various oxides start to increase dramatically, making it hard work for the cat to catalyse them. But, if ur like me and don't care, then running mid 15's gives excellent economy

 

rick i dont care if its winter and snowing then i start the car and its summer again due to the hole in the ozone,,,,,,,,,, if i get more power AND better fuel economy im still helping the world by reducing the use of fossil fuels , that will help me sleep at night

aint bothered about the cat either as i dont have one,,,,,,,, more of a dog man

seriously can any tuner live map my car like this,,,,,,, if so please tell me the price as im guessing its a little more work involved in doing it

id rather pay for that if where talking a extra few hundred quid on top

 

Its part and parcel Ginge, anyone who maps live will do it as a matter of course, as well as all teh cold running areas of the map.

 

ahh the reason i ask stu is that the cossie it close( ish) to being done and when its all runing im gonna get it live mapped and then gonna leave it alone until it rusts away


would you be willing to map it like rick says where i can have a slightly increased fuel economy aswell as power increase ( if minor)

as tbh im not into top speed, 140 is about my limit and even then these days its getting harder for all that

so that a large boost spike when floored would be what im looking for

if the polution gets really bad we could just remove some of the busses in london

 

Not a problem, although, on greens, no need at all, just go closed loop and fit it yourself for up to 350ish Bhp.

 

stu im still on L6 though

might go P8 or L8 but for the cash its tempting to go aftermarket as im also making a new loom but then im going alot more than i should tbh

im prob going light blues too if i get it mapped

but ill have a think about it first before i make the final choice
