blue smoke
Best place to start is with the Valve Stem Oil Seals. Get the one piece top hat type from Fords for about £14. They are easy DIY. You will want the spring compressing tool. Handy tip I was given is to push a rag around the side of the stem seal you are working on as dropping a valve collet into the engine isn't funny. Also remove the spark plus as it makes turning the engine by hand easier (to bring the piston to the top of the stroke so the valve doesn't disappear into the engine once the collets and seal are removed)
After this I would clear all your breather system out.
If this doesn't cure it I would start thinking about having the turbocharger itself looked at as the seal will start to weep after a while. Chipping my FRST saw the turbo throw the towel in within a couple of days

Or do what we did..... have the valve stem seals done... and less than 10 miles after having em done, ended up forking out for a new turbo anyways, cos the extra pressure created by the new seals blew the already very weak turbo!
I would honestly have the turbo checked out first.... it will most likely be that.

Blue smoke on startup is nearly always stem seals. If changing the seals increased pressure the old ones must have been shot to buggery anyhow and would have needed changing. Sorthing the stem seals is cheap and easy. Even if you have to buy all the bits you can do it yourself in an afternoon for about £25.
If g11no spends out on having his turbo checked out and it turns out to be a set of £15 oil seals he will quite rightly be pretty miffed

i am doing the valve stems as of now and the done the first valve already and they look pretty new but will do the rest anyway. checked the intake pipe and they dont look very oily it must surely be the turbo???????
He probably would be miffed... granted...... we were told that the stem seals had been done on our car before we bought it, I didn't believe it so had them done and they were pretty poor..... however, even after having them done when the garage started the car, it still filled the place with smoke.....
Have a nice recon turbo now sat in mi cellar, an am either gonna sell it on... or keep it to have mi zetec turbo'd!

After changing the stem seals it will smoke as oil gets into the chambers. I would have waited a while until the smoke died down before parting with cash for the turbo. If the turbo has gone tits up fit a T3 as it's easy to do and transforms the car and is cheaper than getting a T2 unit
When the seals let go on the standards T2 it would start smoking after about 2-3 mins of starting and would then smoke like mad until it was properly warmed up and would then stop

I got the turbo refurbed at ITS Turbo Systems in Drighlington, West Yorkshire..... good people there, ( you can watch em strip your turbo down and they show you the wear/damage, etc). Don't think I wanna sell it to be honest.... cost £450 as its a T2 hybrid with 360 degree bearing.... its been on ebay twice before Xmas for £250 (loads of watchers) but no bids.....
Am having my 2i sorted this year and a turbo would just put the icing on the cake I thinks.
Dunno how much a standard turbo would be to refurb.....

A stage 1 hybrid FRST turbo is about the £900 mark on an exchange basis a standard one is about £550. Hence why the T3 is so popular as you can get a nice Stage 2 hybrid for standard T2 money
