Ok, half hour left at work and with a bit of exhaust hanging around i decided to have a play.

First i found a spark plug the same thread as the old HEGO senser, a coil, battery & my trusty power probe.

Now the coil packs i'm using are from a 2.3 scorpio with two connections, + & -. When powered up i don't get a spark, this could be to duff plug, not enough amps from power probe or low voltage, although i assume even though it's a coil pack it'll work on a 6v principle.

Next item was a XR2i coil pack with the plug shoved straight into the top of the coil which when probed up created a very small spark, & not all the time.

Sooooooo are coil packs rigged up like this never going to produce a big enough spark which is why afaik all flamer kits come with a oil filled oil, or am i just doing something wrong? Or is it likely a duff plug!?

 

you needsomething to switch teh coil voltage to the plug then break that connection again, just connceting a plug to the ocil itseklf may produce 1 single spark on power up but you are then not allowing the coil to recharge, you need an ossilator circuit, like a 555 timer, 1.1 x C x R = time constant for a 555 timer circuit IIRC

 

you need too intermitently power the plug like wat the distribtor does- on-off-on-off

 

Well, i was switching the power probe to live like on/off/on/off etc etc but it wasn't having much of it.

Something i forgot to mention is i had the plug thread earth aswell.

 

ah, were u switching the power to the coil on/off or teh plug, ?

as Dave says - if you were switching the coil thats why it was only intermittent!

 

Ahhh i c, does it take time for the coil to charge up then? how does this work on a car?

Soo if i keep the power supplied to the coil and put the plug in it'll spark, pull the plug out then back in it'll spark again? yeah? in which case there isn't going to be a way i can get that working on the car?

If i wire up a traditional coil it should work ok then when i switch the suply to the coil? low tension side?

 

yep, but its not just a on/off, it must be timed quickly on/off to give the coil time to rechage etc,

It probably wouldn't work anyway as i'm not butchering my magenx for it and as it's not turbocharged it probably wouldn't work to well but i'm still interested!
