No really it is! I've had god knows HOW many years, and how old it is I don't know! But here's the spec (if you can call it that!)
MAKE : Unknown
CPU : 235mhz Pentium MMX
RAM : 32mb
Floppy, CD-ROM, 2x PCMCIA - and thats it!
It appears to have onboard sound but for some reason it refuses to work - keeps saying no sound device installed, and refuses to accept the 3Com LAN ethernet card I fitted to it
Thing is, all I want it to do is play music via Media Player, through the headphones for when I am drumming. Up till now I have only used an old tape player, but it's seen better days, and it would be a lot simpler to rip tracks off CD's and the like to MP3 put em on laptop and use that with my drums - plus it'd be a lot faster just doing a double click to select a track rather than change tape, fast forward or rewind etc....
BUT! I don't know wtf is going on with the sound device
How do I find out what on board sound it has, and what driver I need for it (so I can try and download it and install to see if it works?
If for some reason I don't have any onboard sound then how do I go about getting one I can plug in (if you can do that) that is fairly inexpensive?
I'm also gonna need some sort of signal booster as I doubt the standard output volume is gonna be sufficient.....
I don't really wanna spend a lot as it's not like it'll be used a whole lot for anything other than a glorified iPOD to be honest.... I've been looking at cheapo lappies on ebay but still your looking at over £50 for a shit one...

All that said, don't worry, I think I have killed it now

I decided to take bits of it apart to see what could be upgraded, starting with the RAM (says 16MB DIMM on it) and then the HDD, which I took out and disconected - says Toshiba 2167mb on it) Put it back together, booted up and now it won't boot up

It has always run on Win98, so I bunged in the Win98SE set up disk and boot floppy, but it only gets 5mins into set up and says extended msdos failure or something and shuts down. Tried installing from the Win2k boot disks but it says "unexpected memory" something or other and shuts down

Fuck

Bet there was some half decent stuff on the HDD I have lost now aswell

Nah, i'ts proper fucked
Won't boot up to Win98 - says the HIMEN (
) file is missing, won't reinstall, comes up with dos error of some sorts, and won't allow me to install either Win2k or XP
So I herby declare it bolloxed, so I'm gonna take it apart - and I mean into really little pieces

Now, with hymem.sys missing, you could of got around it, copying the .sys files from the floppy disk onto the c: drive might of got round it.
However, from your last pic, it'll be lucky to power up, let alone boot up
