Default Technical Discussions. Interested in them?

Weve had a few on here the past few days and i wonder how many people are truly interested in them?

I have a few locked away in a gold members only room thjat i could unlock for a few days if people are genuinely interested.

One of my favourites is:
"How a bigger turbo makes more power with exactly the same boost pressure"

TBH it always amazes me what a small percentage of people seem interested in this sort of thing.

I would have thought that with it being a car site, everyone would want to learn about cars!

Some of the best topics I've seen on here in the last couple of weeks.

Bit of a turn back to car based posts rather than "what should i call my hamster", "Whats the best PS2 game" sort of posts.

I've learned a lot about engines from the one about boost spikes, I did know thata but I didn't realise I knew that. Top threads, shown them to some of my mates here.

It's always good to learn new things - especially when what you thought you knew actually turns out to be wrong

Everything i know about cars was by reading up on the net, also trial and error in the way of 3 novas

Sounds like good information you're stashing away there, let it out in the open for all to see

i love technical topics - especially when they are written in a way that everyone understands, or if not understands, grasps a concept of the topic in question

What do you want to know about N/A engines?

was gonna say that 'most' seem to be about cossies, maybe more people with RS turbo's and NA cars need to ask for specific information,
maybe steering away from the 'how do i get more power' kind of topics and concentrating on 'how do i make sure the car is ready for more power' and what certain components actually do.

in fact, to start off chip or Stu, maybe an explanation of exactly how an Amal valve, map sensor, actuator* all work. i know the fundamentals but would love to fill in the gaps with fact rather than assumptions.

* those weren't done in any specific order, just they popped into my swede first.

I'm really interested, it's great stuff! Thanks

This is what I really really enjoyed about the RSOC days and the early PF days, people experimenting usually with ERST's then technical discussions (or arguements! lol ) arriving as a result.

Thanks mate

Yeah that sounds like quite a good one actually mate.

Kind of a "How boost is measured and regulated" topic?

Do we do it amal valve specific though, or mention other types of control too like a boost controller?

Maybe initially mention just the basic principle of bleeding air off, and then let people ask about the specific methods that interest them?

exactly, lots of people presume the way they increase the boost is to whack a bleed valve on an wind it out.

start with say how an actuator works, then how to control boost ( various methods ) , all the while considering what information the ecu and sensors are seeing and how it keeps the car from melting.

Very interesting, makes me realise how little I know and how knowledgable a lot of people here are, perhaps don't understand 100% but totally enjoyed reading them

Ive started the ball rolling here:
https://passionford.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=157530

But not got quite as far as you want yet mate.

Maybe you could have a stab at one or more of the future chapters ive suggested?

Or if not me or Stu or someone will do it later when we have a little more time

A suggestion if i may.......

Could there also be a Glossary of technical terms complete with explanations....

For those times when we read something and think 'what the hell does **** mean'???

STU maybe you should just put a list up of the kind of topics that are covered to encourage the non-gold members to join up and contribute something towards the site?

Not yet, he is just having fun writing them all!

Definately worth doing in a few weeeks once we have really got stuck in and written a big catalogue of these things though

We can have a topped thread with links to them all by title, and then if people want to click the link they will need to be a gold member

So far I find it to be some kind of esoteric knowledge avalible to few.

If they are written by experienced professionals then I'm very interested. Don't want to read a lot of re-hashed rumor fueled net waffle (of which I will admit contributing a lot to in the past )

Sounds great, i would be very interested to read those too myself.

All stuff i know very little about.

Someone on here MUST be a bit of an expert in such things and have an interest in writing an article?
