Default question regarding escort 1.8GTI estate

a while ago I pulled what looked like fibre glass out of the back of the exhaust pipe - now when the car is started there is, a smell, that the other half, describes as "bad eggs".
question - do I leave it and bump up the life assurance or as I love her to bits, do we need to get the exhaust changed? Any ideas please....

The fibreglass "hair" will be the sound absorbent material from the exhaust box, because the perforated tube has rotted out..
Bad egg smell will be the catalyst working (quite normal)
