a company i used to work for bought a new building but couldnt move in to it until the guy had cleared all his stuff out.anyway the company i worked for came to an agrement to work around him why he finnished his final project.he was rebuilding a nsx for honda uk that the insurance company wrote off.it was the press car as seen on top gear..i got talking to him over a few weeks and it turns out he built/help built a lot of ford prototypes including the 200 and he showed me pics of the first super transit wich i think he built(is this still about)he was going on about loads of other prototypes including 4wd ecorts on sierra chassis or summat wich he helped design he also builds lemans cars.he was a very interesting and clever man to talk too especially if you are in to fords

At least 1 4x4 RST was built by either the factory or for the factory, it was white and registered on a G reg, I think collins might have had some input maybe later tho, I do have some pics that of it when the car was in performance ford in around 1990,
It had a very rare transfer box that was made for the car, from what I can remember without going in the loft for the mag anyway!

here is the info i have
the youth your right about the g reg one dude
ever wanted to know what fords secret development escort was?????
well after a massive amount of research ive come up with this info
a s2 was one of the first 4x4 vehicle using a transverse engine system
rather than the ferguson hardware enigne itstallation, although the 4x4
system was subseguently put on hold.
this design was latter passed on to the mainstream ford enginering
departments it was latter used in the transverse-enigne escort rs 2000
that was revealed in september 1993.
right there was one that was built by some guy that was working for ford
some time ago this was a 4x4 and the reg number is E388 YVX i beleave
this is the first one that was done,
a second 4x4 s2 was G343 FRE
back in 1989 a guy called john found a number of cut-up ex-ford
development cars in a breaker's yard all of which had rather trick 4x4
drive line's, the cars were from a batch of 40 s2 shells that were made to
run the 4x4 running gear at the time these were put together for the use
of the ford research development at dunton,
what i would like to know is what did happen to the rest of the shells after
all there was 40 made did thay cut them all up after
more info comming latter about a secret rs 2000 mark 2 and a mexico
plus a g reg escort cossie prototype

I remember seeing an article in a mag a good few years ago when the mk5 rs2 and the escort cossy were being developed and there was a pic of of what looked like an escort cos minus the whaletail and it had a slightly different front bumper with an rs2000 engine mounted the same way as it is in the escort cosworth but it was rear wheel drive, reading this topic has just jogged my memory about it!
i know that gartrac or wotever their called used to supply the panels required i.e transmission tunnel etc for a rally team that used the mk3 escot shell... surely you could get in touch with them and see if they still make or have any of the tunnels as they would fit an S2 the same as it would the mk3 escort ! happy hunting anyway folks, i'd love to see a 4x4 s2 !! by the way, is the mtx75 the same gearbox they used in the 2.0ltr 4x4 mondeo..?
**edit** here's their website.. http://www.gartrac.com
