Default S1 owners! What RPM in fifth on standard wheels @70mph

Quick one for the S1 owners,

Very scientific bit of research this!

My RS1600i at 70mph is reading about 3k on the clock, I know my S2 at 3k was indicating just under 90mph, so was wondering what a S1 reads at 3k?

On standard 15" wheels please

Dunno if it helps but on 15" standard rims, standard box my S1 was doing 70mph at 3700rpm....

Now on S2 ratios ond 16" wheels so can't compare for you either. 70 is rouughly 3100rpm ish though.

pmsl just checking to make sure you lot are awake!!

that's really wierd, like I say my S2 at 3k was doing just under 90mph and my RSi was traveling at roughly 70mph at 3k .....

I was looking for a half way house, for cruising.

This is bizarre, i've always thought the RS1600i had the revvyest gearbox between itself, a XR3i and a S1. But looking on the net, assuming the data is correct, it isn't alot different to a S2 box?

RS1600i Final drive
3,84:1 final drive ratio.

S1 RST Final drive
4,27:1 final drive ratio.

s2 RS Turbo Final
3.81:1

Is this right cheers

That sounds about right

I think both the S1 and the RSi must have roughly the same gearing in top

Your 3i sounds like it had the same gearing as my S2 (which over read because it was on larger than 195 tyres)

Thanks for the information

No because a STANDARD S1 box with STANDARD S1 ratios will give around 70 MPH at 3700 rpm....like I said earlier. My car was nigh upon TOTALLY standard and origional when I bought it.

Thrushes cars won't have had the standard spec origional gearboxes in them if they where only doing 3k at 70...

3700 @70mph would tie up with the ratios quoted above I suppose, still don't get it though, A) that a RSi has a longer final drive than a s1 b) my RSi box is supposed to be a similar final drive to a S2

Explains why when people compare S1 and S2 turbos, they'd say S1 isn't as good dailey driver, not suprised with that gearing!

Thats right Ad - the S1's I found to be a pain on the motorway as you drive along at about 90/100 and it's screaming it's nuts off at about 4-4300 (can't quite remember - been a few years) 120 is over 5k IIRC, never had it to 140 tho

The 3i was better for motorway driving, my mates S2 was better still.....

That's why mine now has S2 gear ratios John.

It used to really spin the wheels when it was on S1 ratios.

3700 @70mph isn't practical, and with a powerful S1 your just gonna whip through the gears in no time.....this probably wouldn't have been a problem in a standard car, and the box was probably geared like that for rallying ...................this is probably why most the S1 i see on the road are pottering around the 65-70 mark lol

Still can't believe the RSI box is taller There goes my master plan for a cheap reliable LSD box, that would fit minimal effort...

I really like the S2 box, i think at 80+mph your doing about 3k dead on, you can cruise all day with that

Bit too steep for a n/a RSi though, will make it feel slow should refraise that, 'feel slow to me' ! good fun though

Thanks for the input
