175 sounds a bit optimistic, but surely can't be far off, they got over 300bhp right?

With the wind behind it , then yes theoretically it could reach 175mph if it had the power to pull the gearing....

I would say that it would need the exhaust and filter mods along with the chip to get anywhere near that though and a VERY long stretch of road .

A 350bhp Cossie also hits 155mph easy as pie, but after that, especially at 170mph, each mph requires a LOT of extra power, as wind resistance builds up exponentially.... It takes 400bhp to hit 170mph in a Sapphire (at Brunters).

Also about gearing and what rpm the power is though.

A T4d 400bhp Cossie on a std gearing will do it easier than a T34d one just cause of the power being higher up, a genuine 170mph in a cossie is v.high rpm...

im sure E36 M3s are close to about 280bhp.

M3 Evos are 321bhp and have more chance of getting to the figures quoted but as mike says will need a VERY long stretch of road to do that.

Yeah but Superchips reckon a chipped M3 will be what a standard Evo M3 is, Surely they will know better than most what figures you can expect from any car .

I didnt ask "how big a stretch of road would it take for a ........" I simply asked " Can it do it..."

If it is a 3 litre one, then I doubt it would get to 175mph, but if you can give me the final drive, fifth gear and tyre sizes, I will tell you what revs it would need to do to achieve this. I thought that you meant an Evo version, as you mentioned 320bhp and once chipped, these can get to 350ish with exhaust and filter mods...

Just done a quick search and the 3 litre cars have a 22.7mph / 1000rpm top gear, which means that it would have to reach 7,700rpm in fifth to hit 175mph. I would imagine that this would be a little too far past peak power of the 3 litre car, even in tuned form (as standard they are rev limited to 7300), and would say that 165mph would be more realistic, unless the rev limit is raised or gearing altered with bigger rear tyres .

Was gonna say that people reckon they have had these reading 180mph on the speedo, but obviously this was probably pub talk!

Would agree that the EVO version would be better suited to higher speeds acheived.

Peak power is around the 6700rpm mark from memory, which when multiplied by Mikes 22.7 per 1000 gives a figure not to distant from the limited 155mph.

Assuming that the rev limiter were to be removed, I still recon it would take a fair bit to hit 170 let alone 180.

I can only comment on the evo (3.2) but mine did this in fifth :

No idea what the speedo said and it didn’t hit the limiter or the shift light didn’t come on, got their quite quick to, only wish I had looked at the clocks as it should have been well off the scale …

Derestricted, ACS (who I think can be trusted) quote 282 kph (175.2 mph) Only mod they do on this spec is the delimiter module (about the size of a match box i.e. not a chip or remap) and exhaust.
