Are Dell Laptops any good?
I used to work for them, and I like them.
cheapo ones will still be cheapo ones though.
Just get a good warranty out on it ?
As when a laptop fails it's almost always the motherboard that need changing, and that's half the pc, so best have warranty.
And if your little sis is very little get a full cover on it, so when she throws it somewhere it gets replaced.

We have no trouble at work with dell support,
used to have some trouble sometimes though,
and don't forget it's hardware support really, so when you're calling for little problems with programs it really depends who you got on the phone
some might be helpfull, some not.
So if you don't know shit about pc's, buy it from a local shop so you can harras them everytime you get a popup window or can't understand something when trying to install a program

20-40gb drive is fine if not playing games
at least 512MB memory (more if she is impatient)
the smaller the laptop generally the more expensive they are

Support is not that shite but if you don't know your way around pc's they have to go through every step by phone and it can take a looonnggg time...
Most support for everything are call centres nowadays anyway.

Oh yeah,
first decide if she really needs a laptop...
If it's just to sit in a corner of a room and don't take too much space,
a nice desktop with flat panel is a better option, more for your money...

And yep, most are call centres... doesnt mean they all offer the same level of support though does it
lol,
i'm in IT too, never really had problems with Dell support, only once for my own system at home, they kept nagging about a cd i was supposed to use. Got it all sorted in the end.
At work it's just calling telling them what's wrong (if not too sure diagnostics
sometimes waste of times, if you got an error code very usefull, just tell and technician is there next day). But most of the time no problems.
Luckely they don't break often either.

Sorry Kev, But I am a IT manager in a large group pissed of with this INtel rip off.
I only buy HP (compaq), because they are the best, I don't care about the make of chip. if it fails I just send it back.

tried and tested
PS Ive never had issued with Dell support either
I wouldn't touch a Dell laptop if it was the last laptop on the planet, because I KNOW that the keyboard would fail before I'd typed my name, and then the processor would get unseated because someone farted 100 yards away from it etc.
Dell = POS.
Want a decent laptop with a decent warranty get something proper like an Acer or something.

there is enough to worry about in IT as it it so if I can remove as many hassles as pos my job is easyier and IMO intel is removing one hassle which is AMD
Dell servers I dont really like we have a Dell SDLT Library and thats it.. bar that its all HP\Compaq. until we go SAN soon
The same reason I use Intel would also apply to Cisco wouldnt use anything else but
You can trust em infact the company trust the kit enough to go VOIP with them

Dell warranty is good too, if you have next business day warranty they turn up next day and repair. (can't afford to have them take the laptop and come back a week later in a big company really)
AMD / INTEL, they're both good, just as kev says, the intel bit makes it that bit easier to manage in a big company. (when making images that work on different machines etc...)
