Dell ONLY use Intel because they made a deal with them to supply cheap CPU's if they never use AMD.

Dell support is fine. Run any diagnostics before you phone them and if they ask you to start taking things apart just tell them you're not prepared to do that and they'll send an enginieer.

We have server rooms full of Dell kit all with Gold Support. 9 times out of 10 if we have a hardware failure there will be replacement parts or a Dell engineer onsite within a few hours.

Oh and iirc, Dell call centres have moved from Ireland to Scotland

I use MSL1000's with 4 Scsi Raid cages with Raid ADG striping down. it works the dogs and its HP. I had the option of using SATA which would give me a 8 cage stripe, but they are much much slower the 15k scsi drives.

Well what can i say, many different opinons but mine is..... product is good, end-user support is not.

For those of you who work in IT and use deal, Dell priortise there customer base with the business customer being first and everyone else second. As a business customer they do give good support and spare supplies package depending on how many machines you buy and the size of you IT infrastructure.

I personally would buy a hp. They are much better built and in terms of features they are very good.

HP have there own ebay shop too and nearly everything sold has 2 years + warrenty.

There support is only 8 - 8 everyday though.

Regards

Jay

we don't even have gold support for our servers, only 4hrs contracts for servers (silver i guess) and 4 or 5 years next business day for normal pc's. and laptops.

Oh and you can be sure they do not prioritize business clients, as you phone for a specific machine, not for a specific account.
(of course there are machines specifically made for business...)

we dont have problems with Dell but being probably one of their biggest customers we wouldnt

ive used loads of laptops over the years and for drivers compatability youll be hard pressed to find something better than Dell as they are used my microsoft as part of their OS testing.. generally means you can install XP without needing any extra drivers.. unlike my HP laptop which is a bag of shite and nothing works till you find their drivers.. and dont get me started on that with HP.. a lot of companies could learn a lot from Dell driver support, its defo second to none

My laptop is a second hand Del Latitude CPx. It doesn't have all these mod cons you lot are going on about, but I only use it for Internet, email, Word and Excel. Does the job for me even tho it is slightly dated now, never had a problem with it.

If someone were only going to use one for light use rather than remote dial up into Company servers etc..... i'd highly recommend them

ive not read the whole stread but got a few bits to throw at johnny...

the AMD mobile chips are SHIT, for a laptop you want intel and you want centrino (pentium M aint the same) desktop different matter i love AMD chips, but in laptops... no no, they run too hot and drain too much power.

also the HP hx range of laptops are rubbish, theyre underspecced nd the build quality is awful. you can get an nx6110 which woulds good on paper, but a laptop that costs 300quid? c'mon open your eyes, its NOT good...!

i'm an hp man through and through (we buy HP at work) and i personally wouldnt buy an nx laptop (even tho the company buys em for normal peeps)

the nc range? now thats a different matter, excelent build quality and well specced nc4020 ismy new fave, its very small (12" screen) light, battery lasts AGES, and it fast enought to do everything i need to do on it whats more if it breaks (which ive never seen an nc laptop fail personally) i know HPO will be straight on the case and replace any faulty componentsunder warranty, there'll bea courier to my door the next day and itll be abck befoer the end of the week repaired

aww how cute

our average server has aproximately 50x ultra 3 drives connected up to a hp fibre channel SAN normally connected to a 3 server cluster (each server running dual 2ghz Xeons) with all sorts of extra gubbins running off them. its a weekly job for me to go round all the servers replacing hard drives that have failed, there are that many of them

rhys, i expecta laptop battery to last at leasta whole working day, otehrwise whats the point in having a fookin laptop. these cheap laptops normally only have about 4hr max battery life i'd expect at least 6, normally 8 and and more than 8 is a bonus
