just had a call from lennie (who has got my car for a few days whilst i'm im in dublin) and aparently after he picked the car up its started to miss quite badly. will die when idling etc. sounds to me like ts either running on 5 or 4 (remember, v6 )
now if it turns out its only running on 4 and the 2 not firing ll happen to be on the same coil (coilpack x3 wasted spark) wht "bits" will need to be looked at? wht bit of wiring, connectors etc.?
obviously the edis unit itself nd the coilpack itself, but my car is notorious for bad wiring, so that would be 1st place to look...
anyone know how the edis "talks" to the coil and could use that info to work out how to trce a wiring fault if its not firing 1 of the coils?
OR is it case of it will NEVER fre only 2/3 of the coils even if it get a bad signal, therefore the coilpack must be knackered? (or a plug/lead is fooked)
OR my engine just lost a piston
doubtfull tho

si, THANKS
could you just answer the last Q for me tho... is it possible for a nonfaulty coilpack to just fire 4/6 cyls? saves me working it out for myself

Could be leads, either of the paired plugs, a single coil within the pack, wiring, or edis.
Nothing else !!
UNLESS the crank sensor alignment or sensor itself is wrong !!
Sorry, impossible to say for sure I am affraid without being there

Jim, the coil pack is JUST 3 coils on your car nothing else.
I would swap leads and plugs around to see if the fault moves around.
Otherwise change the plugs and/or leads.
Without proper diagnostics, the only way is to change things till its fixed !
EDIS will always fire a coil irespective what the ecu is doing.
For example, If you disconnect the ecu and crank the engine, you will still get sparks !!

si, the point i was getting at is will the coilpack do out withut the edis connection
i now realise... of course it wont... lol
lennie check this
ie if the coil doesnt fire, the rev counter doesn get the pulse...
so if it shows <6250 rpm on the limiter (feel free to rev the tits off it
) then its not tryin to spark
lennie check this
]The IDM signal present on all EDIS modules is used as the factory tach output to the ECU. This signal is used to determine the welfare of the ignition system. If a coil primary opens or does not fire, the IDM signal is not emitted, and thus the coil is faulty. The IDM signal is triggered by the flyback voltage of the coil being fired. The EDIS module processes this into a 512us pulse on the IDM line during operation. When the engine is stopped, but the Key is turned on (KOEOff), the EDIS module emits a 64us pulse every 262.144ms to indicate proper operation. Because of this, any tachometer operation from this line must filter out the 64us pulses.
so if it shows <6250 rpm on the limiter (feel free to rev the tits off it
) then its not tryin to spark
