Default RS1600i zetec turbo restore - update 01-05-07

Photo's of it at Andy's house before i bought it

just home

interior

1.6 8v engine

to be replaced by this 2.1 zetec with t34 turbo

firs things first, get the interior out of the car so i can see whats what

underside of the car, covered in lashings of unserseal, hiding a multitude of sins no doubt

if youre planning on doing any underseal removal, pop down to your local shite shop Lidl n buy one of these for 9.99, saved a load of elbow grease even comes with 3 yr warranty

my mate franky lending a hand for once hes just bought himself a nice F reg S2 Turbo

found a few patch repairs which have been poorly carried out in the past, they'll need to be ground out n redone.
drivers side nearly down to bare metal

shonky repair

Absolutely brilliant mate!!!!

If your running mega power, like 300+ bhp I would get the shell strenthened (like seem welded or something) as i've heard S1 turbos running mega power have had problems with the shells cracking up under the load, especially round the sunroof area, and suspension struts at the front You might want to put a post up on the main forum to confirm!

Can't wait to see it finished!!

I'm loving the idea of Diamond Cut 7 spokes! And a 2.1 ZT should make it interesting!

AD-RS1600i, i will check that out and see what the score is with seem welding, my mate was telling me i should stitch weld the seams, but further investigation is needed before i do anything.

Scott R, not sure what im doing with the engine as yet, dont think i'll keep it as once the zetec goes in i probs wont ever wanna go back

marco, dont suppose you got any pics of youre S1 have ya?

Twins, i used the electric scraper first to get rid of the thick underseal, was 2 and 3 layers thick in places, just to hide rot etc then the wire brush to remove the rest of it, youre right tho it doesnt half remove it quick

what are 17's like on the mk3 escort? do they catch or scrub at all? planning on lowering the car around 35mm with the 17's on.

also i need to know what the largest diameter disc i can get behind a 17" RS 7 spokes using 2wd cossie 4 pot calipers?

apart from that, thanks for the positive comments lads

Going for that s1 tom nite ( the 2.1 zvh with stage 2 turbo and stage 4 head ) will have to think about gettin that seam welded runnin all that power and deffo gonna invest in one of them shit lidl scrapers. Cant wait to see the old 16i when you have finished mate

Think you'll find seam welding and stich welding are basically the same thing, I dont think all "seam welds" are continuous..

Best thing by far you could do would be grab a copy of the FORD manual on converting the RS16ooi to motorsport spec .. this would tell you EXACTLY how and where to strrengthen

cheers Damo... i'll keep an eye out for them

made a bit of progress 2nite after work, pulled the steering wheel and dash out of the car

Found the cause of the water in the footwell problem... rot behind the battery tray area. and the wiring is shocking, twisted together wires, no insulation etc etc

I have found the same probs in my XR2. Hence I am making a new loom. And I see you have one of those annoying auto-bid things on that 4x4 cooler on Ebay

You bastard, I wanted that

done some work on the inside of the car today, stripped of the sound deadening from the bulkhead, front and rear floor pans and the boot floor found some nice bits of orange metal underneath tho

passenger side front

drivers side front

boot floor, the spare wheel well is orange cos it was full of water thanks to the leaky tailgate

heres a pic of the bulkhead, looking upwards at the battery tray area, must be why the carpet was damp in the passenger footwell... now where'd i put that grinder?
