Default Smoke on start up. Stem seals or Turbo??

This is on my 2wd sapphire.

On start up and running at idle when I rev it, it smokes a fair bit (mainly blue but also slightly black).

My guess is that its the stem seals have gone. I am changing the head for a reconned one. The problem is I don't want to spend time doing this to find that its the turbo smoking!!

How can I tell at this early stage??

The turbo is a T34 which has abot 15,000miles and about 5 years old.

The engine has 111,000 miles on it and as far as I'm aware hasn't had a head rebuild.

I couldn't be a problem with the bottom end! Could it??

Thanks
Stew

Will do the above.

I have a spare bottom end which is wire rung. Do these wire rings need replacing if they have already been used??

Anybody know the rough cost of a standard bottom end rebuild?? Providing you do it yourself??

B19bal: I've got a couple of pics of your car from when I owned it. Keep meaning to post them up. Will have a look for them.

Thanks
Stew

if engine is cold, and it smokes on start up then its likely to be v.s.o.seals if it does it when the engines warm its likely to be rings etc, but thats not gauranteed either way but its quite likely to be that

Strut brace: Those leads did the job

Only really noticed the smoke from cold but it doesn't really clear itself after a few revs, which stem seals would?? Will check when it gets warm tomorrow (tomorrow will only be the second time I've taken it out on the road)

Retest for the MOT

"will a compression test tell you if it's the rings?"

A leak down test should. Not sure how much the reading will rise by if everything is oK though?
