Fitted some new clocks today, from an Efi car...

now it idles at 2k (on the dial), and revs off the clock ??

any ideas why, and how i can stop it ?


car is a EFi ZVH, I dont understand whats up with it

 

You need to change the little resistor by the coil. Its on the green wire. Not sure what you need to change it to off the top of my head. #

But I remember when we were building a Mk6 EFi Turbo, same thing happened.

you need to replace it with another one different rating, otherwise the circuit is broke.

I had a resistor put into my clocks, nothing was removed. There isn't one to remove

 

is it easy to sort it ?

Well if you look next to your coil mate, you will see a little isolator, that is what causes the false reading on the clocks, perhaps you should change this to one from an efi loom!

I have a coil pack on my car with Omex 710 management. The clocks were kept the same from when the car was MFi, all APT did was fit a resistor on the back of the clocks on 2 of the rev counter prongs

Well exactly, Tony is using a completely different setup to what we are talking about.

You'll probably find if you had fitted Efi clocks on yours tony it would have been alright!

Im just trying to help, without you having spend more money than need be! And a simple problem like this, you shouldnt need to!

Dont get me wrong I aint no tight git! Ill spend money where it needs to be spent like my internals!

 

sorry to intrude but while we are on the subject, my rev counter has stopped working.. its ever since I stupidly moved the needle round with my finger Was off the scale And know its a no go

Any ideas on how to rectify this small problemski

sensitive little things arent they Was hitting near on 8000rpm tho even if it was stationary

thats probably your best bet maytee! that aint too hard, although if you had trouble chaging a bulb, then there aint any helping you!

I think you will keep a problem with your rev counter.

The inside electronics of the MFi rev counter are different from the EFI one.

The MFi is fed by the negative lead of the coil (conventional rotor ignition).

The EFI is fed by a low tension pulse from the DIS ignition module.

Actually not true. The EDIS module puts out a separate signal in one pin to drive a standard rev counter, but for some reason it was not used in CVH efi cars. Instead the signal was taken directly of one of the coils. One coil sparks half as often as a standard distributor coil so the rev counter reading was doubled to correct this.

Standard clocks can always be used on any setup. Using efi clocks with a distributor setup is more difficult. I assume you still have a distributor? Why did you change the clocks in the first place?

 

cos i am running EFi... on a ZVH

and my old clocks were faded and old and crap

 

I too had this trouble worked out cheaper and easier in the long run just to slap in a set of std mfi clocks as by the time it takes to find someone who can do all the relative working out to tell you what size resistor to put in the circuit to get it to work anywhere half way decent you could have pissed the job off and be onto the next headache ................................. besides if you go looking hard enough you can pick a set of clocks up for a tenner or less than if you know the right ppl.
Oh then you got the next probem of which clocks will work the best with your fuel sender unit as 90spec clocks on a 88 harness just dont really work below 1/2 a tank

 

why is that ?

 

coz apparently the 90spec wiring to the clocks is on a differnet layout or sumit and the fuel gauge will register ok from full to 1/2 a tank then it all goes pear shaped and it gets a bit erratic after that most of the time registering way below the red .................................................. ...... ive ran out of fuel on more than one occaison trying to guess how many miles i got left in the tank

Soon as i plugged the 88 spec clocks in all was fixed

 

cant you mix and match, by putting the gauges from an 88 set of clocks into the 90 spec casing ?

 

So what's the difference then? Without the resistor on the back of the clocks mine still read double.
