Default 1987 Escort 1.4 Xtra

Hello all. I hope you are able to help with this problem.

I just purchased the escort and before I start really using it I want to do some basic checks. With the engine running I could hear a hissing noise from the back of the engine. I took off the air filter and it needs a cleaning but I noticed there is a small red vacuum pipe going to the air filter from the intake manifold, it was completely blocked. I cut off about 5 mm and was able to blow air through it. I noticed that where it connects to the manifold there is also another connection with nothing attached (see photo).

With the engine running I blocked the connection that had no pipe on it and the engine speed picked up and ran smoother. So my question is, what should the setup be and where should this connection go to?

This connection has nothing connected and the source of the noise. The top connection going left has a red pipe going to the air cleaner, the other was not connected!

One pipe connected and going to the air intake
