Default Flashing glow plug light - 1.8 TDCi

Hello everyone.
I've read dozens of threads about the flashing glow plug light on the mk1 Ford Focus 1.8 Tdci, and still can't figure out what's wrong with mine (2003), so I'm here asking for your help.
The main difference I've found is that my glow plug light starts flashing BEFORE cranking the engine.
It will start, run really rough for a few minutes, coughing lots of light blue smoke, with minimum throttle response (goes up to 1000rpm), and often shuts off. As the engine warms up, it will allow the revs to come up slowly, until suddenly being able to reach 3000rpm (limited by the limp mode I believe). From that point on, the car is drivable, with some power loss, and hesitant throttle.
After the first trip of the day, it will start smoothly, just a bit of smoke, still with low power and bad throttle response.
I should also mention that it went to limp mode while driving, and that the light as been flashing from that point on (even after resetting the ECU). Only noticed the smoke clouds the next time I started the car.
Can't read the error codes (took it to a local shop, the scan tool couldn't connect with the ECU), and can't take it to a Ford dealership, as corrently there is none on the tiny island where I live. That makes it a lot harder to diagnose.
So, after checking everything I could, still can't find the problem. At the moment I'm suspecting a sensor fault in the Diesel system, either the fuel pump pressure regulator or the pressure sensor on the common rail, as the light starts blinking when the key is in the second position.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Best regards.
