Rod bearing
Hi, recently bought an 07 ranger 2.5 tdci 4x4. Bought it with an engine knock and owner saying it s main bearing.
Took engine out opened it and found the main bearing for connecting rod number 1 missing I mean completely missing. NO Trace of the bearing at all. The rest are worn but present. Crank is marked too.
What are the odds of it. Completely perished and not someone removed it?
Also should I skim the crank or replace new ones on ebay are around 350pounds
Thanks

Main bearings are on the crankshaft into the block.
Rod bearings are....for the conrods.
Post a picture of the bearing. In extreme cases, the bearings can get crushed, mangled, destroyed so yes there may only be one bearig left, or it might have spun and melted itself into the other bearing.
But if a bearing has spun in the rod, the rod MUST be replaced too, or it will fail again very soon after. Some people say they might be able to repair the rod, re-size it etc...I'd go for a new rod.

Tomorrow and post them

If itm is simply not there, and not destroyed and not there...ie, the sump would be full of swarf etc. Then it is possible the engine had a problem, someone took the sump off to inspect, found the damage and decided "fuck that", thew it back together to sell to someone else to deal with.
In this case that seems to be you. I'd be cautious though, if they have done that....there could be other things wrong too so I wouldnt go mad spending money on it. How much are known good second hand engines ?

the few i found where 1500 to 2000 pounds then add shipping and it's still a used engine which i don t know anything about, my plan was to check the block for cracks, check the pistons and rods, buy the rest new, ie rings bearings seals ect get new water pump / timing chain whilst i m at it and since engine is out put new clutch kit. In theory i should have a "somewhat new" engine. The bore dosen't look bad.
