I've read the well-known MTX75 conversion a number of times and it persuaded me to go out and start getting all the bits together. So far I've got:
- MTX75 Gearbox (XS4R-7F096)
- Tower/Gear Lever
- Standard OEM MTX75 clutch/pressure plates
- Dunnell lightened flywheel
- Gear cables (Ends/adjusters have been modified)
- O/S driveshaft centre bearing
I'm under the understanding that I'll need:
- Non-ST170 driveshafts, am I right in saying both the 1.8 and 2.0 petrol driveshafts will be suitable?
- 1.8/2.0 slave cylinder (Unless the original ST170 item works?)
- 1.8/2.0 Focus clocks? I've read the standard ST170 clocks will read massively out with the MTX75 - so is this the best route to go?
Lastly, has anyone got any first-hand experience doing the conversion themselves? I'm no master tech but I'm more than willing to give it a blast with some help. Anything to bear in mind?
Thanks for reading, I didn't really want to bump a 5 year old thread in the original MTX75 thread. Here's a piss-poor photo of my dirty car anyway.
Hello, did this a couple of years ago and plan to basically do the same again next year.
You will need the drive shafts from a 2.0 petrol or a 1.8 diesel, can buy new for a reasonable price.
The speedo will read way off and replacing the clocks will have no effect, I bought a unit to correct the signal but never tried it. Could just use a gps speedo etc
If you allow the engine to drop at the gearbox end then changing the gearbox is easier but it is tight, not much space under the wheel arch
Changing the gear cables is not much fun, remove one front seat then unbolt the handbrake and remove the centre console which will allow you to get at the gear lever and cables
You may have trouble removing the lower ball joint pinch bolts so best to get 2 new ones
