Skyline 4x4 Gearbox conversion
Is there still people out there wanting these in the Ford scene before I consider online auction sales?
The one I put in my Escort some 5/7 years ago after rebuilding the gearbox might be up for sale in the not too distant future due to the move to a sequential dogbox.
I have looked at the Skyline gearbox prices for the R32/R33 and it might be worthwhile me swapping the front (Ford bellhousing bit) off and making it back to fit the Skyline.
Obviously fitted because they just don't break behind the 4 cylinder turbo. I would rather it go to a Ford conversion but, if needs be I'll convert it back.
I would sell the whole kit, light weight flywheel, twin plate AP clutch but no propshafts as they wouldn't fit a road car and they are built to suit my non-Ford front transmission.
Synchos are mint, no grabbing or crashing in any gears.
If anyone is thinking about it give me a shout, I have not thought about the price too much yet but my new box has a price
Price ideas.
For the box, transfer, std gearstick & a quickshift, flywheel (steel light weight for 7.25" clutch), AP high pressure 7.25" twin plate (new intermediate and friction plates about 600 miles ago), hydraulic concentric clutch release, mount and aero pipes.
£1800
No props, no diffs, no hydraulic diff control pack, no hydraulic control unit. These are needed for the new box.
Thanks

i probably can't afford it, but would be interested to know a rough price, always wanted one of these. For me i'd have the extra work of converting the rest of the car to 4x4 but that's not too bad.

I am going this route in my escort cosworth track car. Its been a long term project so far, i have all the bits ready to go, i have had them for a few years, they are with a really patient guy in the UK. due to me being lazy and now covid. it is still taking time to get a courier to pick up the bits for me i an going to get my arse in gear soon and get them over to me, the reason i went GTR box was here in OZ they are quite easy to get, however the price has skyrocketed in the last few years. Lucky i have some spares.

What you have to consider is why you are doing the conversion and what do you want from it.
If its a transmission that will handle 500hp + no problem without breaking then thats the reason. If you want split drive then you need the active centre.
You probably paid around £4k for it. It's a dogbox, everytime you change gear its already wearing out. This is where spares are important.
They were at the time the cheapest upgrade to a GrpN car then cheaper than an FFD for upgrades close to GrpA.
Just check first gear ratio, some of them were almost a second gear they were than tall.
Good luck with it. I hope it lasts for you.
The Skyline is a very cheap high power handling option with better features if you need that kind of technology.

Certain problems with the R&D. 1)there are no bits made for them anymore. Everything you need has to be made bespoke. 2) Don't put anymore than 550/600nm through it. It won't last. 3) If you are on track and you go off, don't select reverse very quickly and give it big footfulls, revere gear is tiny. 4) you don't get an active centre with handbrake release.

The Skyline box is far better for my use. The active centre makes a massive difference on a rally car. Not so on a track car, but then on track 4wd is no big bonus unless its raining.
