Default mk1 focus RS rebuild

Earlier today I took delivery of a focus RS mk1 just as storm "Dennis" arrived. What I bought is the bare shell and the tailgate.

A couple of weeks ago I bought another focus which had failed its m.o.t as a source of parts for my other projects, lots of bits will also be useful for this one as well

I was thinking you could do with another project as you don't have enough as it is 😂

What are your plans for it?

I’ve seen a few Rs shells and fancied one. Having been buying and selling the engine parts for several years there is no way you could find the parts to rebuild this to its former glory.

whats your plans for it ?

I disagree, I think there are plenty of standard bits out there (we've got a shed full), more than enough to rebuild that if that's what the plan is.

Hmm, I would hate to think what you would want for a “good” pair of front wings and a bumper. Then there are the small obscure parts.

There is no point in trying to rebuild it to original condition, there are plenty of good ones for sale and the car was broken for a reason. The plan is to make a cheapish parts bin car using the parts I have been buying over the last 2 to 3 years for my other cars. It will probably look a bit of a mess which will upset the purists but it will save the shell.

Battled the elements again today, took the front subframe and steering rack from the parts car and fitted it to the RS with RS suspension and hubs and st170 disks (could not find my RS ones) . Also removed the complete rear subframe and fitted it to the RS which go it on its wheels (see pic) after this I managed to remove the support and steering column from the parts car and got them into the RS which enabled me to get it onto the drive. Need to remove as many bits off the parts car during next week so that it can go for scrap.

That shell needs ALOT of work mate, front leg end, rear inner quarter and inner c pillar for a start 🙈. Wouldn't like to be in it if it was hit!
Only thing going for it was it was hpi clear.
i only found the damage after i bought it!

good luck, i'll be watching this 👍

Due to the weather I have not been able to inspect it thoroughly but from what I've seen so far the front legs and rear quarters are not in the best condition but I would not say unsafe, I am sure all will reveal itself in time. I can understand if buying the car it would be a bit disappointing to find the shell is not in perfect condition but for my purpose it will be fine.

The plan for this weekend was to keep the rain out, as the parts car has too many doors I needed a pair of doors quick and have ended up buying 2 pairs. One pair was local so collected them Friday, also bought a carpet and a seat belt. Last couple of days I fitted as much as possible most of it temporary but its looking more complete.

Battled the weather again this weekend. Collected the other pair of doors, whilst they are the wrong colour they are in better condition so I fitted them. Also fitted most of the RS interior that was in my ST just need to fit the rear cards and steering wheel at some future date.

During the week and over this weekend I removed the engine from my track car, mated it to a standard mtx75 gearbox and placed it into the car. The engine is a st170 block with blacktop head and 1.8mm head gasket, manifold, turbo, clutch and throttle body are all genuine RS items.

Thanks, I am happy with how its coming along although progress will be slower from now on. I bought a universal front mount kit for my track focus but ended up fitting a kit from Airtec so I was going to try and use it on this car, nothing to loose in trying

Ok only reason for asking is I have some oem charge cooler rad mounts that I would have donated to your project. Not exactly the most desirable rs part.

Just a small update. The parts car came with drum brakes so I have purchased and bolted on the rear hubs and brakes from a st170

Back in April I fitted the front brakes, intercooler, fibre glass wings and front bumper, since then the car has been at my mothers home and not been touched until now.
With the sad demise of my st170 a supply of parts became available. The rear beam that I originally fitted has been removed and the one from the st170 now installed which had lowering springs fitted, I had some nearly new brake pipes which could also now be fitted and whilst the fuel tank was down I swapped the tank straps for the stainless steel ones I had. Hope to fit more parts from the st170 soon.
