Default Rs Turbo vs cossie

Hi folks

first post on here although been in the Ford seen for many years. I currently have a fiesta rs Turbo which I have nearly finished building. Keep loosing heart in it for ages then doing a few bits. I have always wanted one and had it quite a while now and never even driven it.
Also have an 2012 Range Rover sport. At the point it time I could chuck some money in and get a newer nicer range for a daily and finish thefiesta. Or finish the fiesta and sell it to fund buying what’s always been a dream and buy a cossie very clean saff or poss an escort and keep my current range.
What would you do in my shoes??? I am finding it quite hard to make my mind up

I’d probably sell the range and have the fiesta and a cossie but only you can decide what you want. I’d happily run around in a Ł200 banger daily if it means more toys

Sell the range rover. Keep the fiesta get a cossie and a cheap run about.

I've had my cossie for 13 years and I still love it. I do fall out of love with it sometimes but I think this is just ild cars in general l.

All I can say is my experience years ago, I'd had r5 turbos, fiat Uno turbo, escort rs turbo, Renault 9 and 21 turbo, then I got in a Cossie and it blew me away nothing I had previously came close for me, a drifting rocket I had to have one

I ended up buying the one I went in was a g plate stage 3 saph.

The power, the noise, the smell are all fond memories I will have forever

Getting rare though now mate, sapphire cosworth 416 on the road, 1000 sorn

Escort rs turbo 859 on the road, 3400 sorn

Must be a fair amount of the sorn ones in unroadworthy condition I would imagine

Blimey!!!, last time I did a check on how many Sapphire Cosworth's were on the road a couple of years ago it was around 1000 so there have been quite a few more taken off the road for various reasons. Rust is still probably the biggest cause I would think , not mechanical ? I am glad the one previous owner to me had the waxoyl treatment done as I am sure it's the reason for lack of rust on mine.

Obviously everyone like different things but theres not many cars i could replace a 500bhp rwd saph imo. Evo’s, Subarus ect get boring quickly due to being 4x4 focus rs’ i would get bored after 2 minutes if it was only for a toy, im already bored of my mk3.

There are far better cars out there now my rs6 is frankly amazing what it does, just a remap and 0-100 mph in 7.5 seconds everytime, but I don't earn it it's all done for me like magic lol
And all that for around Ł40k in my mind is good for a newish car that's reliable and can be used everyday, 20+ mpg on a cruise

But it's not about that for me, in there day a cosworth for me was king if the hill, and that's what I compare to, same with my Humber it's shite by today's standards lol, but take it back to 1959 as it is today and it would be a thing of ore

I can only assume that's why cosworth prices have gone up so much the last few years, as some of the people who couldn't afford them decades ago can afford them now and willing to pay a premium for that bit of history

rs cosworths will always be the brand that started my tuning obsession, my dad used to say you can't get a pint in a quart pot son ie the big v8s from the 60s making 400 hp from big capacity, but with a yb you could, I remember I had a 2.0 yb engine with 50 hp more than my dad's 7.2 litre corvette V8

I've decided to look for a mk2 escort over a cosworth, plenty more parts available without Rs tax , and body panels readily available , that's will sort my RWD fix out and I'll always have the rs turbo for some boost .

How many fiesta turbos are left I wonder .

The first question that would come to my mind is, how many miles do you do per year? If you're doing fairly average mileage, I'd be very cautious about putting loads of money into a toy if it compromises your every day car. No matter how awesome your weekend toy is, if you end up doing 10,000+ miles per year in some shitbox and only drive the toy a handful of times a year, what's the point? The every day car is where you spend most of your time, so I wouldn't sacrifice it too much for the sake of something you only drive on the odd occasion.

I'd finish the Fiesta first, then see how you feel once you've driven it a bit. You might drive it and hate it (plenty of people do when they drive old dream cars), or you might love it. If you love it, maybe see if you can drive a Cossie and see if you want to make the switch. A Cossie is a huge investment these days, as prices have obviously gone bonkers and they require plenty of looking after. That's not to say you shouldn't buy one if you can afford it, but there is nothing worse than sinking loads of money into something that you hardly get any enjoyment out of it, especially if you're sitting in some shonky base model eurobox the rest of the time.

I'd be tempted by a bit of a compromise. Nice, modern performance car for every day, then keep the Fiesta as a toy. Or for the cost of the Cossie, especially an Escort, you could find yourself in something very, VERY nice. For the c.Ł40k people are asking for Escorts, you're into Porsche 996 Turbo money. I know which I'd rather have.

The thing I have always loved with my Saff is the fact that from the outside all most people see is an old Cosworth and the fun I have had humbling much more modern performance cars is where my enjoyment has been. If you see a fairly new Audi RS6 etc you already know its a fast car but with a 30 year old Saff it could be bog standard or one which has got more than double it's original BHP and will suprise you when you try to pull away from it and find you can't!!! I agree with you that as an everyday car it is not as practical as a modern performance car but I have never got bored with mine!

glad to say mine is one of the 131 on the road they are for sure a very rare car and values have absolutely rocketed since i got mine in 2016, some parts sell for mental money eg genuine new gearknobs go for Ł300-450 same for steering wheels, airboxes etc. I think i just about got mine at the right time although took at good 3 years to get it to nearly how i want it.

It’s been five years since I broke my Sapphire and sold it in bits, must admit I haven’t looked back, I love Cosworths in all the variations and to own one was a boyhood dream for me but...........I would not own another one unless I had a lottery win lol then it would be a black 500 for me.

these days parts are getting extremely scarce not to mention expensive, body panels forget it and like any fast ford or specialist cars you can’t leave them anywhere for fear of them getting nicked. Just the other day I read of a 3DR cossie stolen from its owner who had owned it for years, a frsoc member had his MK2 Focus rs nicked from a hotel car park with the thief cutting the disc lock off to acquire the car, a happy ending for the Focus as he got the car back, many are never seen again.

for me any specialist car is not an everyday car, it’s a toy that should be used sparingly, garaged out of sight and out of mind and a second car to use for your everyday runnings that you don’t have to worry about where you park it and or if bits will be missing off it when you return to it.

I don't want a mk2 to do what a saph does though, , if I stick a mk2 though the edge I can rebuild it because parts are readily available without the Rs tax , you can literally buy everything for a mk2 new on motor tools and other shops, if I want fast I'll use the rs turbo, a 300+ one equally scares and gives you the buzz of a saph . 260bhp duratec in a mk2 Is also a lot of fun , no brainer for me , no more cossies .

mk2 escort for me everyday, you can push those sierras through every bend and repair for nowhere near the cossie tax cost, lightweight rwd I love cossies but I will never own one for the repair cost.
good cranks cost a grand now, you could have a 800hp saff and still not touch a mk2 escort with 200hp through the bends.
depends if you are a poser or a driver

good cranks cost a grand now, you could have a 800hp saff and still not touch a mk2 escort with 200hp through the bends.
depends if you are a poser or a driver

100% , totally logical... nice to get in a Ford and not worry over bending it , as you can repair them easily and no Rs tax

If your a poser or a driver then I think neither a MK2 escort or a Cossie are suitable lol

The likelyhood of you being out in your MK2 Escort and coming across a Cosworth on the road is never going to happen. When is the last time you ever saw the 2 of them together!!!
