3.5 seconde difference is quite a lot though. I don’t think the transmission loss is the problem. The suspension is probably the biggest problem, as the Cosworth’s is just not that great. It is way too soft (look at the amount of body roll) and has a lot of bump steer. And overall, the Fiesta ST is just a great handling car.

Just simple progress. Better tyres, better suspension, better engine response and probably less weight too. Even in the wet I suspect the Fiesta would be every bit as quick. Traction in FWD cars isn't anything like the issue it once was, let's face it.

In reality, the Fiesta is better in every way. Faster, easier to live with etc etc, but obviously doesn't have the iconic status of the Escort. I'd happily have either, or both. Fiesta for every day, Cossie for the weekend.

It’s funny though that Fifth Gear did the exact same test when the Mk1 Focus RS came out. In that case it was actually slower than the EsCos by 1.5 seconds. And as far as I know the Focus RS was considered a good handling car at the time.

Never handled? You mean the Escort?

Erm, I think quite a few people might disagree with you there

Nah the escort is a great handling car. Granted the fiesta is very well sorted.
The difference is in my humble opinion is all in the tyres.

As said the escort cossie is such an iconic car. Give the escort some decent suspension then it might of had a better chance

Just goes to show how things move forward.

Suspension, brakes, tyres and chassis being the big factors here.

Still I'd take the cossie 10/10 times.

Tyres on their own can make a huge difference but not taking anything away from the fiesta, that makes it about 4.5s quicker than a mk1 rs also which is a highly regarded car. Shame the eco boost engine will no doubt be soft as shite.
