Third to 4th gear problem??
Hi All,
Just wondering if this is a common problem......1989 Sierra Cossie 2wd.....................car has sat for a long time and found that all gears are good however downshifting from 4th to 3rd does not happen..... ironically going from 3rd to 4th is fine. Any ideas? Dont want to remove the box till i find out what the hiccup may be.
Any tips most welcome

I'm not sure what you mean by being on the same cog, do you mean 3rd and 4th gears share the same cog? If so I believe those are separate cogs but what they do share is their synchro hub. If I'm not mistaken 3rd gear has its own synchro ring on one side of the hub and 4th gear has its own synchro ring on the other side of the hub. So if you would have a worn 3rd gear synchro ring then 3rd gear would grind but 4th wouldn't as it has a different ring. Does it grind if you shift slower or at low rpm? What about if you're double clutching it?
R4N SS .....Oh bugger....that doesn't sound good. Can one still buy the 3rd gear synchro?
Giorgos92....... yes, it grinds at slower rpm as you say......double clutching makes it work a treat with no problem.

Its not only the synchro ring, most likely the slider and gear would need changing as well as the synchro mechanism is a three part construction. Replacing only the ring will quickly deteriorate the dogs on it as the dogs on the slider and gear are worn and wont engage.

Synchro ring and slider is the same for all World Class T5 transmissions. The 3rd gear is available OEM from Tremec, but the 4th gear (input shaft) is not available anymore, so this you would have to sort. 3rd gear is 30 tooth. (It's a part of the 2,95:1 gear set often referred to as Heavy Duty T5.) I used to have a stock of new input shafts but I'm all out. Maybe Bara could help you out.
A lot of cars were fitted with T5s but there are many different ratios.

Be aware that on Ebay there's usually reproduced items sold and they are really bad quality. Go for OEM. AMP usually have the OEM parts you need in stock. I'm tired of using 5speeds as he never replies, so stay clear of him.
Wow !! you are a fountain of information... i really appreciate your help. Looks like its a gearbox out jobbie then :{
I was going to try Burton for the parts however you mention AMP............who is that exactly?

I believe he is a fixer but I suppose he would be able to supply the parts you need. That's his website https://apfgears.com/
Although the Cossy was never sold in the US spare parts for the T5 are available as it was used in Mustangs and other US cars.The T5 parts are listed as World Class T5 parts.

You say that but I don’t really know of anyone that’s had any actual product failures from him but a mate of mine had a new gears built box and it’s done minimal miles and already let go, and that’s not the first one I’ve heard of, you pay for what you get a lot of the time, gears was cheap, but the rebuild was junk....

Hi All,
How reliable are these https://apfgears.com/ people ? I have ordered the gearbox parts with them and sent a large amount of money to them as payment but heard nothing back....getting concerned now. They dont even put a name on their initial emails eg "Cheers Bob, Jim or Tony "
