Default Can a cracked 200 block be repaired with a liner?????

Posting for Phil2400....His Saph Cos has had a missfire/hesitation
for ages........

A few days back he did a leak down test and it showed air bubbles in the header tank, so he thought it would be the head gasket. Took head off and the gasket was fine BUT he found a crack in one of the bores

Is this block now scrap OR can it be fixed with a steel liner????

What causes a crack in the bore like that (will put pics up later)....poor casting???

It can be recovered with liners, but unless these are the Nikasel type listed in the machining section of my website, I personally would not do it above 400bhp...

RichM and MikeR - thanks for the constructive replies

Dingy - go swivel

Actually, I believe that Phil (IMA) used (or proposed using) cheapish liners,
am I correct in saying that at up to 350 BHP (greens/T34/24 PSI) that the
cheap liner repair would be OK?????

Pete, I heard that too.....BUT peeps go on about how fantastic the 200 blocks on here, and that they would'nt use a 205 block for anything above Stage 1

Phil has his old 205 block still...........done about 80k......Maybe he should just use that and be done with it.........

Then again, fitting a cheap liner to the 200 block would cost about £ 100 (guessing)........So maybe that option makes more sense?

Words from people with no clue

ALL my engines run the std liner not as strong as the nicasil (bit ott as can cause water problems as the liners are so thick they actually touch each other)...but are stronger than the original block and are tested to very high BHP....yes i will be using them in my 600plus build as hi comp needs a stronger block.

Doug, it all depends on the crack depth, as if you liner the block but the liner isnt as deep as the crack then there is still a really bad weakness in the block that will spread further potentially.

Personally i would say the cost makes it not worth it unless you have free access to do the machining.

New 200 blocks are only half a grand or so anyway.

When people like mountune use liners, they do so on good blocks, not to repair old ones i suspect.

205 block all day long over a 200 block , seen too many 200 block failure compared to the 205's just ensure its a good one bare in mind they are older
