Default Restoring the underneath of a Cossie

Opologise if this is the wrong section.

Roughly how much does it cost to complete a underneath restore?

Im talking sprayed, beam powder coated, new drop links, bolts etc?

All depends on how far you want to go with it and if your doing the work yourself i,ve recently done my mk5 rs 2000 there will be alot more involved with your car because of the 4x4 system.

I have been told anything up to Ł5k to do it properly.Over Ł500 for instance on chrome plating nuts and bolts etc. I have seen it done on a Saff and I know how much it cost him.

How far do you want to go is the answer?
If you are wanting to replace everything with new genuine parts it's a small fortune,if you are lucky enough to be able to reuse some of your existing parts like suspension that will help.
I'd say from recent experience Ł3-400 for bolts,Ł60 for various clips,Ł150 for zinc plating,Ł300 for powdercoating, drop links Ł30,bushes Ł2-300,paint,materials Ł200,prob Ł80 on things you will buy to clean the underside, degreaser, wire brushes etc,a new fuel tank, pump cradle etc.
The list goes on,luckily I have access to a 2 post ramp and my good friend is a painter so this has made the job easier and simpler,I have went the whole hog and I'd say the estimate of 5k isn't far off if you are replacing everything.

Would say 5k easy. It's very time intensive.

I started mine October 2013 just after I'd had it set up to stage 3 at MSD & new wiring looms etc, it was off the road 4 a yr & half on axle stands, my cousin is a painter so he did all the painting, I had to to the prep, cleaning all that shitty wax oil off my mate did the welding, I had everything either brand new (where I could) or powder coated, zinc plated, new bushes, new bearings, new bearings in the rear beam, new coulovers, new new new etc with paint, parts it was over 5K, but you start to get anal with stuff!!!! The underside was MINT but the brake calipers looked wrong I'll get some bigger brakes 2k later on AP brakes now the rear 1s look to small I'll have bigger discs to match Ł450 while the calipers r off the back I'll send them to big red.... While the box is out I'll fix a hydraulic clutch ŁŁŁŁ why have a organic I may as well have a paddle just incase I want more power..... & so on & so on
I luved doing it but the cost just goes up & very quick!!!! & then there's the stuff that goes wrong in between, & now I want the lump out re built engine bay painted & the hole car..... but if the wife asks it only cost a grand to do the under side......

Once the underside is done next winter I'll pull the engine and give that a freshen up but that will snowball too probably.

The most annoying thing is the rear rose jointed solid bushes for rear arms Ł80 each so Ł320 for four! That was hard to swallow. Did mine two years ago, probably spent 3-4000 on it. I did actually make a list of all the parts and the costs but stopped adding it up as it was frightening!

I spent about Ł1200 I think, but I did everything myself so no labour costs

The hardest part is to get it done when you've stripped it all. But it's all worthwhile in the end

That's looks bloody nice colin...you still involved with RSOC? ,RSty had her last outing (you organised the 3dr stand) at national day in 2008 before a major resto by spesh off of here

An underside resto will grow heads but by god you will never regret it if it's done right as RSty was

Thanks guys

Yes I was 3 dr registrar for about 4 years for the RSOC and really enjoyed it, I stopped because I was so busy with work and felt I wasn't giving it enough time

Only prob with an underside resto is it stops you using the car in the wet, if it gets wet which mine has a few times it's easy to clean just time consuming

The other good thing about doing your own resto is it's nice to know every nut and bolt under your car yourself

I'm up to about Ł5k easy, but that's including the engine bay and I bought the parts a long time ago. They are nearly triple the price now IF you can find them

Cossy Mike, that looks superb. Do you have a ramp so you can get underneath it to clean it?

How much did all that cost?

Mark barber used to do them for around 2.5k, although I'm not totally sure what was included in that
