Bought a Mk1 Cortina GT over a year ago now and a mate of mine stored it in his garage till now Cheers Colin Ginn.Cheers also to Brett Maile for collecting it with me over 250 miles round trip last year.

Started stripping the car.Engine is being built by Dynatech Race Engines.
Been collecting a few bits together over the past year including
bonnet/bootlid/wings/sils/rear arches ect ect

Wow! Memories
Had one of these in 1972 in Lotus colours Green/Cream. Allowed Ł80 in px when selling a Sports car to raise a deposit on my first house. Sold it a month later for Ł85. Wish you well with this project its funny how time makes these cars worth doing up when back then they were worth next to nothing.

Finished stripping the rest of it now.
Connected to the rollover jig.
Soon be off to get blasted.

 

I suppose these where like the escort gti's and st170's over there day? Cheap, fast and disposable?! But now there there the muts nuts. Very cool car mate I shall keep a eye on this! What is the silver coupe in the pic of all the car's in the barn? Never seen one of them before

1972... so probably less than 10 years old and probably on it's last legs. Nowadays a ten year old car is likely to be rust-free and good for another 100,000 miles if correctly maintained.

The coupe is a Saxon Cortina which was built by Colin Ginn.
The car was a prototype in the 60s for the American market but they didn't put it into production.
He built this car using one picture that remaind of the prototype before it was destroyed.

 

That is beautiful. So there is only one? Pity such a nice car isn't out there for more to buy.

 

Yes that one in the photos is the only one ,colin built that from a standard cortina shell ,the original back in the 60,s was destroyed as it was a non going project by ford. Colin is very talented and has built some cracking cortinas

Yes mate although the replacement wings are used instead of NOS.
Other than that mostly all new parts.Engine is being built at Dynatech race engines.1760 stage3 285 cam twin 40s ect.Should go well.

The blasting was done by Colin Ginn at Clacton

 

Been blasted and the welding commences by Mr Colin Ginn.
Will soon have it back and then the long process of prep and paint
and the rest of the restoration I will do.

just out of interest how many hours of welding would you estimate to complete that shell ?

looks like a huge amount of work and probably way more that most would take on.. It look pretty rotten everywhere you can see....

Is this pretty normal for the state of these cars or is there some kind of sentimental reason for repairing this particular one.. Guess they are not so common anymore so you have to restore what you can get hold of..

I would say around 300 hours to panel this car up.
2 door GTs are now rare cars even more so than a mk1 lotus.
The condition of this one is about what to expect from a restoration project.
Rust in all the usual areas.
My lotus was about the same.

wow, thats some work, i wouldnt mind doing one as the fabricator but wouldnt fancy being the customer to pay for one!

 

No date to aim for with this one.I would say about a year or so

 

The Lotus was parked in a garden under a sheet for over 30 years.He had 4 Mk1 Lotus Cortinas.He restored one of them and then sold 2 of them to fund restoring the other.The GT I bought a over a year ago now but had to finish the Lotus first before I started it

 

Outer rear tub welded in and inner tub patched up.A panel cut out ready for new section.
Outer rigger welded in n/s.Scuttle done.Door pillar done.Coming along nicely
