Default Zetec black top or silver?

I know this was a old debate but nowadays what do people think is best and why if you want to start from fresh? Not bothered about rods or Pistons as they will be changed.

I would say blacktop - as you can buy brand new crate engines for £650 +vat and work from there.

Over time it seems that the Silver Top has virtually no benefits and they're getting hard to find now! Black Top is cheap, strong and flows better.

They technically are, but considering no one has ever broken a Black Top, even at 600bhp, then it's a little irrelevant.

I always use black tops, better flowing head and mechanical lifters too.

depends what you can get. I have a silver top as it was a virtually new engine for £100

With such minor differences it's really a case of what crops up at the right price.

These days it makes sense to start with a black top, if you kill it you can source a replacement instantly as they are every where.

So really now they are both as good as one another. Ave ran a silver top for last 6 years with out a problem. Are black tops just the same as rs and St170 blocks.

Doesn't the black top have a better oil pump?

Im using a fresh crate motor for my 400 bhp engine. Made sense having a new block
