is it possible to unbolt the mounts and lift the engine 2-3" to get the sump off or is it a choice of engine or crossmember out to do it?
Yes, I've done it before, lowered the crossmember a little.
Problem was refitting the sump upside down with lack of space, near on impossible to get it properly sealed.

Took it off on Friday. Got the engine up as high as it'll go and the cross member down as low as it'll go, I'm using a lift at work and its still an utter twat! Never again. I'll take the engine out next time!
Done mine insitu with no problem, but used loctite 534 gasket positioner which sticks it to the block while you get the sump into position, I love this stuff I always smear it on all gasket surfaces for extra security and still have an oil leak free YB which is a rare thing.
